GRAMBLING — James Jones made it on his own as one of Grambling State University’s all-time best basketball players.
But the Tallulah native will also be the first to tell you that, had it not been for arguably the greatest hoopster in the school’s history, there’s no way he would have experienced such stardom.
“When I was a freshman at Grambling,” Jones recalled this past weekend, when he was among the 14 inductees into the 2011 class of the GSU Legends Hall of Fame, “Willis Reed took me under his wings and instilled a lot of confidence in me, letting me know that I could succeed at the college level.

Williamson takes new AD role

Ruston native chosen to guide West Alabama program

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Ruston native Stan Williamson has been named as the new director of athletics for the University of West Alabama, announced University President Richard Holland on Tuesday.
Williamson. who had been the AD at Campbell University for the past 11 years, replaces E.J. Brophy, who resigned in May.
“I met with a lot of outstanding coaches, athletic department personnel and administrators at the University of West Alabama and I am excited about this new opportunity,” Williamson said.

G-Men chosen No. 1 in West

Grambling State has a familiar ranking in the annual preseason football poll announced Tuesday by the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The traditionally successful Tigers were picked as the favorites to win the league’s Western Division title for the 2011 season.
Grambling, which finished as runner-up in the division last year, received 103 points and 12 first-place votes.

Former Techster passes away

Services held in Rayville for Stacey Hill Miller

Funeral services wee held Tuesday in Rayville for Stacey Hill Miller, a former walk-on player and manager for the Louisiana Tech University Lady Techsters’ basketball team.
Miller, 37, passed away on Monday following a lengthy battle against colon cancer.
A graduate of Mangham High School, Miller earned All-State honors in basketball before signing to play for Panola Junior College. She later transferred to the Lady Techsters’ program, where she made the team as a walk-on and was a member of the 1995 and 1996 teams before later serving as a manager.

Funeral services for Mr. Herbert Gathright age 80 of Branson West, MO are being held at 10 am Saturday July 23, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Columbia with the visitation being Friday, July 22nd from 5 pm until 8pm at Riser Funeral Home, Columbia, LA. A graveside service will follow at the Rosefield Cemetery east of Grayson, LA. Herbert Gathright was born on February 24, 1931 in Huttig, Arkansas to the union of his parents Percy and Willie V. Gathright.
