Lands celebrate 70 years of marriage

James “Doc” and Freddie Land, of Choudrant, were married July 9, 1941.
The couple have four children — Joyce Kay Smith, Judy Harris, Mary Jones, Mike Land — eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Woman enters contest annually

Pizza with a peach twist takes home trophy

“When we visit my family out in Texas I always have to make dozens and dozens of sweet rolls for them,” she said. “But I don’t mind, I really like doing it.”
The recipe for her Peach Pizza, which won the title of Grand Champion in this year’s Peach Festival Peach Cookery Contest, came from the aunt of her husband of 35 years, Donald.
“I hadn’t made it in a while when I thought it would be a great dish to enter into the contest,” Robyn said. “I’ve participated in the contest almost every year that they have had it, and so has my daughter.”

La. Tech Dairy shuttered

Facility’s cows to be sold in auction on Saturday

The Louisiana Tech Dairy, which had been in operation since 1915, has officially shut down.
Tech officials announced in late March that the facility would close by the end of June due to a lack of students and the cost necessary to renovate much of the equipment there.
But the dairy didn’t quite make it to the end of the month.

Serious wreck on I-20

The driver in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 was transported by helicopter to the LSU-Shreveport Medical Center.
The 911 office reportedly received an emergency call at 1 p.m. Thursday. When deputies arrived the driver was out of the vehicle, said Maj. Stephen Williams, spokesman for the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Two accused of trying to deal pot, powder

Two men were arrested on drug distribution charges in unrelated cases this week in Lincoln Parish.
Thomas James Rambo, 26, of Bossier City, was taken into custody around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to an arrest affidavit, agents with the Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement Team observed a suspicious vehicle turn into a residence on Lakeview Street in Ruston. Agents reportedly identified Rambo as the driver and discovered his license was suspended.

Elvis sighted once again

‘Graceland’ opens tonight

Tonight the King comes back to life.
Basket & Beverage (B & B) Theatre will present “Graceland” by Ellen Byron at 7:30 p.m. in the Norton Building, 207 W. Mississippi Ave. The production will also be shown on Saturday night as well. Tickets are available at the door for $10.

Riding the reading wave

Smaller groups ‘tailor-made’ for children

Select students from all over Lincoln Parish were able to participate in the Summer Reading Literacy Camp for the fourth year, creating an opportunity for them to enhance their literacy skills.
Jan Murphy, elementary supervisor, said she was thankful for parents to share their children with the program this summer.

TECHLondon offers diversity for students

Seventeen Louisiana Tech students and two professors have just returned from London, England. As participants in the TECHLondon program, this diverse group of students studying English, theatre, engineering, sociology, and biology, traveled to London and Southern England for a three week study tour in which they attended numerous plays, visited literary and historical sites, and attended lectures on Shakespeare, contemporary theatrical practices and Jane Austen.

New Tech @ Ruston, school is still in session

During the month of June, the nationally recognized program held its inaugural R4 Institute on the Ruston High School campus. Designed to provide participants with an opportunity to “Rethink, Recharge, and Reboot at Ruston,” the 30 hour experience provided intense training in Project-Based Learning and 21st Century classroom culture.
