Recently, I read about this handsome older couple featured in the paper. It seems they had had happy, successful lives and been married for 65 years. How lovely, I thought. Wrong.

I was just a baby lawyer — maybe a year or so out of law school. I had been fortunate enough to be hired by a four-man firm here in Ruston and landed back here. I consider myself so blessed to be in a community surrounded by so many of you good people. I love this place. But, I digress, that’s not my story for you today.

Amazing year, great students

I’ve just returned home having attended an exhilarating and inspiring program recognizing many of our finest students as “first in the state or nation” in some form of competition — academic, athletic, extra-curricular, or enrichment. It’s amazing that Lincoln Parish has so many students rising to this level of challenge. This speaks well of our young people, schools, families and community.

F. Jay Taylor modeled leadership

Louisiana Tech President F. Jay Taylor was a bold competitor. He inspired through a confidence, a security which he affectionately shared with those of us fortunate enough to work for him. When we succeeded he applauded, and when we made our mistakes he picked us up, forgave us and encouraged us even more.
His loyalty was unquestionable. As a member of his team we knew he was with us to the end. That loyalty instilled a safe domain where we were free to administer in the best of traditions.
