Rotary announces March students of the month

The Ruston Rotary Club proudly announces the recipients of the March Student of the Month Awards. Recognized by Rotarian Jathan Maricelli, each student was honored at the March 23 luncheon and presented an award of achievement by club president Andy Halbrook.
Each awardee has maintained a minimum GPA of 3.5 and been active in extra curricular activities and leadership roles on their perspective school campus.
Cedar Creek is represented by Marissa Lee, a senior with a GPA of 4.22 and ACT score of 29.

Community helps to grow student success

Writer criticizes country’s military endeavors

The U.S. supported Fidel Castro’s goal of overthrowing Cuba’s dictator in the 1950s.
Apparently, our leaders assumed that Castro would establish a government acceptable to our interest. Once Castro was in power, he ran up his communist flag. We helped place a communist country 90 miles off the Florida coast. However, those in control of the United States decided that we must attack communist nations on the other side of the world, Korea and Vietnam. We expended close to 100,000 American lives plus untold billions of dollars without real success.

Help improve students' performance

The time has come to address the proverbial elephant in all of our living rooms as we acknowledge this reality: Nearly half of our Lincoln Parish youngsters showed up on the first day of kindergarten this fall without the skills they needed to learn to read (DIBELS benchmark data, Brigance Inventory of Early Development scores). Before their days in school had even begun, an obvious “achievement gap” already existed among our youngest students.
Between the years of one and three exists a unique opportunity to stimulate children’s language, cognitive, emotional and physical development.
