Warn teens about dangers of drinking

Spring is in the air, and for local high-school upperclassmen spring brings prom. Unfortunately, for some of them it also brings underage drinking and poor driving decisions.
On Friday during a “mock crash,” Ruston High students got a first-hand glimpse of what could happen if they make the decision to drink and drive. Students were presented with a realistic scene complete with fake blood, broken glass and police and emergency response teams.
According to the presentation given by the Ruston High School “Get Out There” team, which is devoted to stopping underage drinking and drug use, someone dies in an alcohol-related crash approximately every 20 minutes.

United Way hands out awards

The United Way of Northeast Louisiana held a “Celebrating Excellence” awards reception at the Lincoln Parish Library recently to honor outstanding employee campaigns and individuals for efforts and commitment made to helping people and improving community. The 2010 Lincoln Parish campaign raised $340,000 for the United Way — a 45 percent increase over the previous year. In the top picture, campaign chair Bill Hogan, left hands out an award to Jeff Parker, left, and Lindsey Graham of Community Trust Bank. Tech College of Business to co-host Business Outlook Summit

The seventh Annual Business Outlook Summit, sponsored by Community Trust Bank and co-hosted by Louisiana Tech’s College of Business, will be held on April 8, at the CenturyLink Headquarters in Monroe. The event will feature a number of distinguished speakers who will deliver economic forecasts for the region, state, and nation.
Delivering the economic outlook for the nation is keynote speaker James Glassman, managing director and senior economist with J. P. Morgan Chase & Company. Speakers providing regional economic outlooks include John Francis, assistant professor of economics at Louisiana Tech University, and Robert Eisenstadt, associate professor of economics at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Lifepoint Church shows off renovations

Kindergarteners at Ruston Elementary would like to thank John Ward, DDS, for his wonderful presentation about taking care of our teeth. He also gave us all new toothbrushes. We would also like to thank, Joyce Crowe, Amari Dean’s grandmother for coming to read to us on Dr. Suess’ birthday. She works at the Lincoln Parish Title I office.

Congratulations to the Cedar Creek Middle School Science Fair Team for the great win at the Regional Science Fair on Feb. 22. The Regional Fair had 185 projects in sixth through eighth grade. RHS FBLA claims conference championships

Ruston High School FBLA rocked district again this year with our second best championship finish ever and our highest ever total of 48 Excellent or above placements. After having the conference postponed due to weather, RHS students showed up determined to maintain the standards set last year.
