Elementary Science Fair
Simsboro Elementary School recently held its annual Science Fair. All participants did an excellent job on their projects. The winners are as follows:
• Second grade — First place: Rena Doss
• Third grade — First place: Kareline Young and second place: Braxton Taylor
• Fourth grade — First place: Kassidy Cherry; second place: Jayla Allen and third place: Matthew Gates

Twelve students to perform at Carnegie Hall

Twelve Ruston High School students have been selected for the 2012 American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. Participation in the Honors Orchestra, Honors Band and Honors Choir is limited to the highest rated high school performers from across North America and select international schools.
RHS Choir Director Mindy Martin said this is the largest number of students from any one school to be chosen for the honor choir. Acceptance to the elite group is a direct result of the talent, dedication and achievements demonstrated in each student’s application and audition recording.

Remember those lost in Iraq

The War in Iraq officially ended Dec. 15, but troops weren’t completely pulled out until Sunday.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs website, in over eight years the United States has lost 4,484 military personnel to the war effort. However, that number does not include the thousands that were physically and mentally wounded because of the war.

Growing numbers behind bars

Last week I wrote about the benefits of local addiction recovery programs in helping to cut down the number of those arrested and thrown into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
I also mentioned that at one time it seemed like a rarity to know someone who had been to jail, but the increasing number of drug arrests is making it more commonplace.
Then this week my eyes fell upon a report that indicates this seemingly high percentage of people that have been arrested is not my imagination.

Holidays bring many memories

Christmas is right around the corner and yet, there are so many things left to be done before I feel I have completed my home and tidings of joy for the season. Everyone has their last-minute stops that take priority, while others work to complete as many job obligations, so that they have many opportunities to begin new family traditions for the New Year. Just last week my friend Georgia was talking about her sisters and her mother, all taking some time to whisk and whirl about the Coates’ family kitchen. She wondered if this might be a new tradition, as this 2010 year had taken her grandmother and her father; although the bowls were quite full, the tears were full that day with joy and sadness.

State endures red ink woes

Just 29 days before Gov. Bobby Jindal and the 144 members of the Legislature are to be sworn in, they got a strong hint that governing might not be a bed of roses during the next four years. The four-member Revenue Estimating Conference (REC) met Dec. 14 to give revised revenue estimates for the current 2011-12 fiscal year and for the 2012-13 budget year as well. The news was not good.

Man, 22, arrested after traffic stop

A 22-year-old Ruston resident was arrested early this morning on charges relating to marijuana.
Marc Edward Haymond, of 411 Fountain Drive, was arrested at 1:39 a.m. after being pulled over by a Ruston Police Department officer.
According to the affidavit, Haymond was driving south on South Vienna Street with a nonworking passenger side headlight.

VFW moves building fund

The VFW Post No. 3615 has moved their building fund from Bancorpsouth to Community Trust Bank. The building fund was moved to make it more accessible to the public as there are more locations. Anyone wanting to make a contribution can make it at any Community Trust Bank.

Gulla, Fitzmorris to wed in February

J.P. Fitzmorris, of Ruston, and Jacquie Gulla, of Sharon, Penn., are pleased to announce their engagement and approaching wedding.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Gary Gulla, of Hermitage, Penn., and Mary Ambrose, of Mesa, Ariz. She is the granddaughter of Marian Gulla, of Hermitage, Penn., the late George Gulla and the late Mary and Max Tomczack.

The groom is the son of Florence Fitzmorris, of Shreveport. He is the grandson of the late Florence and Jack Fitzmorris.

Margie Opal Davis

Funeral services for Margie Opal Davis, age 84, of Ruston will be held Friday December 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. Chris Witt. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Calhoun, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mrs. Davis was born May 17, 1927 and passed away December 20, 2011 following a lengthy illness.
