GRAMBLING — A quick look at some vital numbers leaves one wondering how Grambling State University’s football team wrestled away its latest Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.
No, they didn’t do it with “mirrors,” even though the following facts belie the Tigers leaving historic Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., this past weekend with a title game victory over Alabama A&M:
• Grambling State’s total offensive yards was 182, nearly half as many as the 332 rolled up by the Bulldogs.
• The Tigers completed a grand total of four passes.

’Dogs playing with ‘house money’

Bowl-bound Tech wasn’t expected to go this far so soon

For Louisiana Tech University’s football team, everything now is the proverbial “icing on the cake.”
After being picked among the also-rans in the Western Athletic Conference and relegated to the lower tiers of the Football Bowl Sudivision rankings during the preseason, the Bulldogs are playing with “house money.”
They’re champs of the WAC — outright, no less — and heading to the Dec. 21 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
Forget that they’ll go into that 7 p.m. (CDT) ESPN-televised game as an underdog to Top 25 ranked TCU.

RHS tournament has busy schedule; 14 teams entered

It’s that time of year again and Ruston High School is here to bring you an early Merry Christmas with its nnual Christmas basketball tournament.
The Bearcats and Lady Bearcatsm along with 14 other teams, will be playing in a four day tournament starting on Wednesday.
Games will be played at both the boys’ and girls’ gyms located on the east side of Ruston High.

Techsters play at ASU tonight; Bulldogs’ Johnson earns award

in

Coming off of a one-point win over previously once-beaten Mississippi State in its last outing, Louisiana Tech University will put its modest two-game winning streak on the line tonight when the Lady Techsters face Arkansas State starting at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Joneboro, Ark.
The contest can be heard on the LouisianaTech Sports Network on the ESPN 97.7 FM and KTKC 92.9 FM stations, with the pregame show beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Verna Anne Poarch Myers

Verna Anne Poarch Myers walked with God; then she was no more; because God took her on Thursday, December 8, 2011 peacefully at her daughter’s home in Geismar, Louisiana.  She overcame the sting of cancer and death by living life with her family and friends in her last days.  Verna was 64 years old and a native of Virginia having lived in Ruston, Louisiana since 1981 with her high school sweetheart and husband of 49 years.
