All those old familiar places

Isn’t it funny how sometimes you can go somewhere and just the subtlety of a scent, or the sound of a voice just makes you remember “all those old familiar places.” I know it sounds cliché, but it is so true in my life how this happens. Just this week there seemed to be one of those times where a whirlwind of all of those little things either took my breath away or caused me to burst into laughter or tears from the nostalgia.

Dowlings BBQ heats up for football season

Locally owned and operated, Dowlings Smokehouse BBQ has had roots in the Ruston landscape for 38 years.
Owner Jeremy Telford reopened the smokehouse in 2003 after his grandfather Louis Dowling, retired the business in 1995.
“We make a lot of the same sandwiches my grandfather made and we have also added some items to the menu that he didn’t have,” he said.

Students enjoy apples, athletic success

Kindergarten Apple Day
It was an exciting day Sept. 30 at Choudrant Elementary School, as the
kindergartners had their annual apple day. Apple day was close to our learning
unit on apples, and the students were able to celebrate by visiting many hands-on
learning centers. Some of the activities the students were able to enjoy with their apples involved painting, measuring and cooking. We were very lucky to have great parent volunteers to come and help us out with the fun. The students, teachers and parents had a great time, and, now, we are looking forward to Pumpkin Day.

Honor Society helps with Special Olympics

NHS special olympics
Special Olympics of Louisiana held a flag football camp at Cedar Creek’s Cougar Stadium for area Special Olympics athletes. Cedar Creek’s National Honor Society provided volunteer workers to help with each skill station that was staffed by coaches from the area. Each athlete had a personal volunteer coach and cheerleader to help and encourage the athlete. At the conclusion of the camp, the athletes participated in a game of flag football and all the volunteers cheered them on. Everyone had a fantastic time.

Creek has 2-1A test in Monroe

Cougars take No. 7 ranking to St. Frederick

For the second consecutive week, a city-based school will meet up with a Monroe rival.
Last week, it was Ruston facing Ouachita in a District 2-5A battle at James Stadium.
On Friday night, it’s No. 7 ranked Cedar Creek heading down I-20 to take on St. Frederick in a District 2-1A duel at the Warriors’ stadium.

Lady Techsters set for tough schedule

Highlighted by a non-conference schedule that features 13 games against teams with winning records a year ago, Louisiana Tech released its 2011-12 women’s basketball schedule today.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and Co. will face a 29-game regular season slate that features 15 non-conference contests and 14 Western Athletic Conference tilts.

Techsters host San Jose State

The Louisiana Tech volleyball team (9-12, 0-5 WAC) returns to Ruston to face San Jose State (6-12, 1-3 WAC) Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the first of back-to-back games that the Lady Techsters will play in consecutive nights.
Tech will square off against nationally-ranked Hawaii Friday night at 7 p.m.
