CenturyLink honored with Freedom Award

ARLINGTON, Va. — CenturyLink was one of 15 employers from across the nation to be honored with the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
The Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the Department of Defense to large, small and public sector employers for their exceptional support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. The annual awards were presented on Sept. 22 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

Ribbon cutting held for S2S Tutor Center

A few years ago, the National Association of Professional Organizers designated the first week of October as Get Organized Week. And while you may have misplaced your notification of this event, it’s nonetheless a good time to see just how organized you are in the important areas of your life — such as your finances.


You can organize your finances in two basic ways: by keeping track of where your various accounts are located and by consolidating your assets. Let’s look at both these areas.

Take steps in family business succession planning

Question: I own my own business. Several years ago my son came into the business. One day I would like for him to own it. Is it better to try to sell it to him now, or just leave it to him in my will?
Answer: If your business is successful, good for you.
Unfortunately, most small businesses are worth more to the present owner than to the next guy. Once you factor in salary, perks and tax breaks, a successful business is generally more valuable to the owner if he keeps it than for the price he would fetch selling it.

Municipal bonds may be good for portfolio

If your investment portfolio consists of only equities, you may want to diversify. Stocks and other equity securities are an important part of your investment mix, but you may also want to consider some fixed income investments like municipal bonds. Income is generally free from federal taxes and state taxes for residents of the issuing state, however capital gains, if any, will be subject to taxes. Income for some investors may be subject to the federal Alternative Minimum Tax.

NY radio station interviews Tech professor

New York radio station WFUV recently broadcasted an interview with Louisiana Tech assistant professor of English Scott Levin, exploring his choices for creating a new course at Fordham University in New York City called, “Rock, Rap and The Poetic Tradition,” which immediately became a popular course on campus. He was asked what it was like bringing popular culture and contemporary music into the classroom.

RCT hosts auditions for upcoming production

Auditions for “Kringle’s Window” by Mark Medoff will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the lobby of the Dixie Center for the Arts. No experience or prior preparation needed to audition for this play directed by Nancy Wallace. There will be a total of 12 characters:
• Male parts — three teenage boys, three adults over 40
• Female roles — Two girls under 10, two teenage girls, two adults over 40
