Haz-mat plight, grass fires, break-ins among incidents

While people rang in the New Year, Ruston’s fire and police officials responded to a few calls across the parish ranging from grass fires caused by fireworks to a haz-mat situation and DWI’s.

Funeral services for Mrs. Edith E. Shepherd, 87, of Monroe, will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 2, 2011, at First Christian Church with Rev. Randy Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Edith passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2010. She was a lifetime member for over 54 years of First Christian Church where she played the organ and sang in the choir for over 35 years. Mrs. Shepherd was a former member of a bowling league and a bridge club.

Whether it’s to save money, get in better shape or lower blood pressure, many area residents resolve to quit smoking as one of their New Year’s resolutions.
Different techniques are employed to reach this goal, with some stopping “cold turkey” and others using a patch or other tools.
Ruston resident Danielle Hamilton has set a date of Feb. 8 to quit.

A new beginning

Grambling swears in new mayor, council

A new era for the town of Grambling was kicked off Thursday as new Mayor Edward Jones was inaugurated in the Black and Gold Room of the Favrot Student Union on the Grambling State University Campus.
“It’s a great day and I just want to thank everyone here,” Jones told a packed room of around 350 people attending the inauguration.
