Basketball season brings school spirit

Bethel Christian School is well under way with their 2010 – 11 basketball season. Faithful fans support the varsity boys, varsity girls and junior varsity boys at every game. BCS cheerleaders this year have new cheers, chants and stunts promoting team and school spirit.
As the holiday season quickly approaches, Bible classes are preparing students for the school Christmas program, which will be presented on Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, beginning at 6 p.m. Every grade will be involved.

Rapping students learn math facts through song

The sixth-graders in Patsy Williams’ math class were having problems with their multiplication tables. The “Rote” memory practices of years ago proved to be of little help, as well, threats of giving zeros was not accepted. A dilemma had arisen, one that challenged Ms. Williams’ teaching experience. What could be done to motivate a group of energetic sixth grade students to learn their multiplication tables?
The answer came in a most unusual way. It was all too obvious and quite simple. What form of music do young people often copy? “Rapping.” It was a no-brainer. Williams had already noticed that during recess duty her students “rapped” while playing and never missed a beat.

Area man celebrates his 100th birthday

Jack Beckham, of Hico, celebrated his 100th birthday on Saturday. He is a lifelong Lincoln Parish resident, farmer and former meat processing plant manager. The World War II veteran was married to Alice Pixley, who passed away in 1973.

Simsboro homecoming court announced

Simsboro High School will celebrate its homecoming on Thursday. Homecoming court members include, front row: Seniors — LaSheba Wright, Cara Houck, Jessica Brunston and Kelli Gaodwin. Back row: Freshmen — Caroline Perritt, Jodie Curtis; sophomores — Tyra Buggs, Jordan Best; juniors — Tanajah Ginyard and Anna Dowling. There will be a morning presentation of the court to the school at 10 a.m. followed by a schoolwide pep rally at 2 p.m. in the main gym.
