Creek excels in javelin event

It doesn’t matter.
Cedar Creek has been one of the most successful schools in the state — regardless of the classification — for hurling the javelin this spring.
Sophomore Ashley Aldredge has Louisiana’s best mark in the event and is two-for-two for first places in postseason competition.
Ditto for Josh Cox, only a freshman who has also ruled both district and regional competition during the past two weeks.

Even Start well worth keeping afloat

Our area universities are more than up to the task of auditing the program and presenting the facts to the state, but with time running short on the strapped program, any more study should be done with all speed.
Federal funding for Even Start programs has slipped dramatically in recent years, putting the onus on the state to help prop the program up and keep it from disappearing entirely, which is a real possibility. The state’s budget can handle a little investment: millions in tax cuts on are the table for serious consideration, showing a level of budgetary flexibility.

Summer not a time to be idle

One option worth looking into is the summer reading program at Lincoln Parish Library. Named “Get Reel @ the Library,” it gives students in grades six-12 a chance to earn incentives for the fall while potentially making new friends from neighboring schools.
Participants are asked to read 2,000 pages on any topic and attend at least half of the scheduled activities to have their names included in a drawing for a laptop computer.

Even Start fights for life

“The federal government has dramatically reduced its funding of this program. If we don’t find some funds, I take them at their word that they’re going to have to shut down. That would be a huge loss for us.”
Sharbono led Pastorek through the program’s two classrooms on the Lincoln Parish Career Academy campus and described to him the benefits of Even Start and the challenges that lie ahead.
