Gratitude takes some practice

It becomes easy to forget that this special day is about looking at what is good in our lives, instead of worrying about what can go wrong.

Bearcats vs. Bears: playoff duel

The quarterfinal showdown is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff from Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge.
It’s a return to the south Louisiana area of the state for the second consecutive weekend for the ‘Cats (9-3), who turned back Fontainebleau in Mandeville 19-17 during second round action last weekend.
Another road trip or not, Laird and the red and white are more than happy to still be playing.

Count your blessings in U.S., parish

To begin with, we live in a country where it is safe to vote, and freedom of speech prevails. And don’t forget about freedom of the press and freedom to choose one’s own religious path.
While feasting on Thanksgiving turkey and ham, remember to be thankful that we live in a country where food is abundant. Most of us will probably enjoy a week of leftovers following the holiday meal while those in other places long for enough to eat.

DOTD to work on intersection

The detour route for those who need to access the area of La. 146 near its intersection with U.S. 167 is Louisiana 822, Shapiro said.
Lincoln Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 Chief Dennis Ford said the closure of the intersection could affect response times to areas on the eastern end of La. 146.
“There’s no doubt this will have some effect, but we will work around it and do what we can to minimize any potential problems,” Ford said.

Bearcats: rushing for glory

In the previous week, during a postseason opener against Mandeville High, Ruston High used its rushing schemes to get into a position to pull off a 24-21 victory in the final minute and a half.
And for Friday night’s battle against Catholic High at Baton Rouge’s Memorial Staidum, head coach Billy Laird realizes even more the value of that running assault.

Be safe over the holidays

With Thanksgiving on Thursday, the roads will be full of revelers on their way to celebrations, which means the major streets and Interstate 20 are bound to be crowded. Motorists should allow themselves extra time to make it to their destination so they do not become rushed when faced with extra traffic. People who feel rushed are much more likely to drive without proper caution, which can lead to an accident.

I’ll take that confession now

I wanted something different — preferably something that included air conditioning and heat. Yes, I’m a creature of comfort.
To make a long story short, I made it to college based on academic achievement and pure dumb luck and have been in the journalism field for several years now.
Overall, I’m happy with the path I followed, but sometimes (like all of us), I wonder about the road not taken. Luckily, being a reporter offers me many opportunities to explore other jobs should I ever choose to hang up my steno pad.

Ruston sees growth spurt

The cost on new building valuations and permits in 2005 was almost $33 million, but in the past fiscal year, it’s gone up more than $10 million. Hollingsworth said he attributes the city’s growth to what Ruston can offer and what Realtors have been preaching for decades: location, location, location.
