Lady Techsters tumble at Florida International

MIAMI, Fla. — Alexus Malone scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds but Louisiana Tech ran out of gas down the stretch, dropping a 57-54 decision to Florida International Thursday early afternoon at Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
Tech (12-6, 3-2 Conference USA) took as much as an 11-point lead in the third quarter and led 52-48 with 3:24 to play in the game before FIU ended the game on a 9-2 run to pull out the victory.

Tech softball picked to repeat as C-USA champs

Louisiana Tech softball set all sorts of program firsts as a team and as individual players last year and three weeks before the 2018 season opens, the Lady Techsters have set another one.
For the first time in program history, Louisiana Tech is the preseason favorite to win the Conference USA regular season title according to the 12 league coaches.
Head coach Mark Montgomery and Co. were selected first out of 12 teams by a vote of the Conference USA coaches, edging Florida International for No. 1 on the league’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Thursday.

Bulldog project postponed to September

The Ruston Cultural District Board of Directors recently stated that the “Bulldog Project,” which was originally set to be released in early 2018, has been postponed.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances the unveiling of the project will now be in September 2018,” said Ruston Main Street Director Haley Perot.
“The statues were specifically selected to be a bulldog to show the unity of the city and university in Ruston — home of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Cultural Construction: Fundraiser to bring machines to Civic Center

The Ruston Cultural District is bringing Cultural Construction to the Ruston Civic Center area from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Haley Perot, Cultural District board president, said the event is meant as a fundraiser for the district.
“The Cultural District wanted to do some fundraising for future cultural events,”
she said.
“Surrounding cities have been doing this for a few years. They bring these different machines out and it is easy to let children explore these machines they wouldn’t get to get a close look at otherwise,” she said.

Shooting suspect in custody

A Mesquite, Texas, man charged with attempted second-degree murder in connection with a November 2017 shooting in Ruston is now in the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.
Brian L. Milsap, 22, of 2423 Trenton Drive in Mesquite, was arrested by Ruston police Tuesday on the attempted murder charge and for possession of marijuana.
Milsap reportedly shot and wounded another man on Nov. 27 in the Clinton Circle area. Though detectives were quickly able to identify Milsap as the alleged suspect and made several attempts to locate him at the time, they could not.

Tech’s M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology earns top ranking

Louisiana Tech University’s Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology program has been named one of the top SLP graduate programs in the country by SpeechPathologyGraduatePrograms.org. Of the 240 schools reviewed, Tech’s program ranked No. 29 overall and earned the highest ranking in Louisiana.

Bring back the fish in the fountain in Railroad Park

As my Baby Boomer coworker alluded to in her column Wednesday, hearing stories of youngsters growing up in Ruston during the late 50s into the 60s does hit the funny bone deeply.
Tales of window shopping, visiting the old Ruston Airport to watch the beacon flash red and green, and yes, even watch the goldfish swimming around in the fountain at Railroad Park just tickles us.

Dunkin’ Dogs to host North Texas tonight

RUSTON — After spending the last month playing seven out of nine games on the road, Louisiana Tech will have seven of its next nine games inside the Thomas Assembly Center starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday vs. North Texas.
The matchup can be seen online at WatchStadium.com as well as select TV stations, including KPXJ-CW (Shreveport). Ron Thulin and Tim Scarborough will be calling the action.
