Where did the summer go? School is starting soon. Are your children excited? There are a lot of concerns children have about their first day of school — riding the school bus, meeting new children, new teachers and other unpredictable worries.

Preseason congratulations

Preseason congratulations are in order for the Grambling State University football team.
After winning Southwestern Athletic Conference and Historically Black College and University championships last season, the Tigers have been tabbed to make it to the top again this season.
Not only did Grambling lead the SWAC with 14 G-Men chosen as preseason All-SWAC selections, senior quarterback DeVante Kincade was voted the preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

GLYNN FEDERICK JR

Glynn Fedrick Jr., age 63, of Ruston, LA, an electrician, died July 14, 2017. Funeral services are 1:00 PM, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Choudrant. Visitation is 12:00 PM until service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in the Pace Cemetery in Clarence, LA under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Outlying schools receive security upgrades

Editor’s note: This is the first story in a two-part series updating the community about upgrades to parish schools.
After Ruston city schools completed security upgrades on all campuses last year, Choudrant High School, Dubach Elementary and Simsboro Schools have begun to complete their security updates before the beginning of the school year.

Designs for Bulldog Project to be selected Thursday

As the deadline for sponsors and artist submissions passed Friday, the Ruston Cultural District Board’s Bulldog Project is officially past stage one.
Haley Perot, president of the board, said she is proud of how many artists decided to participate in the project.
“Extending the deadline was well worth it,” she said. “By doing that it opened up a whole new group of people that didn’t know about it.”
Organizers don’t yet know how many artists they have because mail-in applications are still arriving, Perot said.
More sponsorships have also come in.
