New students flood to Tech

While Tropical Depression Cindy didn’t leave a lot of water standing in the streets of Ruston when she roared in late last week, Louisiana Tech University did experience a flood of its own — a flood of incoming freshman students and their families.
There were 564 new incoming Tech students who attended last week’s orientation session, the second following a honors student session that started off the summer with 330 students registering to begin classes in September.
That’s the kind of flood the Daily Leader likes to see.
Even better, the forecast calls for more.

Woods looms as draft ‘steal’ for Cowboys

in

A cornucopia of items, observations and other thoughts from the sports world:
• It’s not often NFL executives exhibit the giddiness of a pre-teen when doing a post-draft evaluation of its latest acquisitions.
But such doesn’t apply to sixth-round pick Xavier Woods of the Dallas Cowboys.
How much did “America’s Team” covet the West Monroe product and former Louisiana Tech University secondary stud.

NATCHITOCHES — Eddie Kennison rounded a bend of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum, which mimics the meandering Cane River Lake, catching the eye of fellow Hall of Fame inductee Juan Pierre.
“THE Eddie Kennison,” Pierre said after doing an interview Thursday as part of the Hall of Fame’s introductory press conference. “I had speed and maybe could of hung with Eddie for 10 yards, but this guy was fast.”

LSU stuns Oregon State

062517 LSU celebration.jpg

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nothing LSU encounters in the College World Series championship series will be any more daunting than the task the Tigers had to complete to get there.
The Tigers had to beat an Oregon State team that owned the most formidable record of any team in four decades, and they had to do it twice.
They did in dominating fashion.
Caleb Gilbert held the No. 1 national seed Beavers to two hits in 7 1/3 innings, Michael Papierski homered from both sides of the plate and LSU won 6-1 on Saturda after beating OSU 3-1 on Friday.

Wobblehead turns heads in hot weather

in
Harris, Glynn.jpg

Ruston’s Greg Terzia is a serious bass fisherman. He regularly competes in tournaments and has won his share of them.
Last week, Terzia was fishing an event at Lake D’Arbonne when he set the hook in the jaw of a 6 pound bass.
“I was using a Wobblehead when the bass sucked it in,” Terzia said. “This time of year, this lure can be dynamite, especially if you don’t like to fish deeper water. You’ll have better luck with the Wobblehead in fairly shallow water, two to eight feet deep.”
