I.A. Lewis gets first win of season over Richwood

in

I.A. Lewis Middle School looked to its defense Monday night as the Rams recorded their first win of the season by defeating Richwood 14-0.
Neither team lit up the scoreboard until late in the third quarter when Rams quarterback Joshua Anderson broke free for a 37-yard touchdown run to push I.A. Lewis up 8-0 following the two-point conversion.
The Rams added an insurance score early in the fourth quarter Xavior Dunn took a straight dive up the middle and powered his way through several attempted tackles on his way to a 42-yard touchdown run.

Tech golfer honored for academic success

Louisiana Tech senior golfer Jack Lempke was named an Outstanding Senior Scholar by the Louisiana Tech College of Business this week, honoring the seniors success in the classroom and across campus.
The Outstanding Senior Scholar award is only given to up to 12 individuals each year by the University’s College of Business.
To be eligible, a student must have at least a 3.7 cumulative grade point average and be involved in either an on-campus student organization or in volunteer work done in the Ruston community.

Lady Techsters hoops game to be televised

Louisiana Tech head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and her Lady Techster basketball team will be a part of the Conference USA’s television schedule this year when they host Charlotte on Feb. 13 at the Thomas Assembly Center.
The game will be televised live on the Fox Sports Network with tipoff time set for 8 p.m. CT.
It is one of eight regular season C-USA games that FSN will televise during the year starting with the Tulane at Marshall contest on Jan. 9.

Royce Row Thompson

Royce Row Thompson, 88, of Ruston, passed away October 8, 2013 in Shreveport, LA. Preceding her in death were her husband of 36 years Dr. William L. Thompson of Itta Bena, MS, and her parents, Floy T. Row and James Roy Row of Batesville, AR. She is survived by her daughter Anne T. Hough and husband Jim of Ruston, her son William L.

Lincoln Parish residents can rest at ease knowing the parish’s police and fire departments are prepared to work together in case of crisis or homeland security threat.
On Wednesday and Thursday Lincoln Parish hosted a National Incident Management Systems class, from which all participants graduated and are now certified.
The NIMS classes are offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Eight arrested on drug charges in ‘Summer Heat’

Operation Summer Heat adds eighth arrests to the more than 100 arrests that have been made this summer.
At 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement Team executed three search warrants for 108 Richardson Hill Road, 120 Richardson Hill Road and 1270 Emory Road, which resulted in five arrests. Three additional arrests were made at Louisiana 152 at Louisiana 545, 297 Rose St. and Cranford’s Store Northside as well — all of which involved distribution of methamphetamine.

Bienville, Union students visit WaterFest, learn conservation

Fifth-graders from Bienville and Union parishes were soaked with water conservation knowledge at Lincoln Parish Park on Friday.
For three years the Louisiana Sparta Groundwater Commission has held WaterFest events for fifth graders in Bienville, Lincoln and Union Parishes. All fifth -grade classes from each parish are invited to attend WaterFest.
Lindsay Gouedy, education coordinator for the Louisiana Sparta Groundwater Commission, said the fifth graders learn about quantifying water, water pollution, water conservation, water law and much more.

Boys, Girls Club presents ‘Jazzland’

The Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana will host Jazzland, a tribute to Louisiana’s jazz legends, Nov. 1.
The event will help raise funds for the club and tickets are currently on sale at Community Trust Bank locations and The Boys and Girls Club.
Eldonta Osborne, the chief professional officer for the club, said the concert is a way to highlight the artistic side of its members.
“We want to encourage the arts in our community and in our children,” he said.

Breast cancer awareness

With the yards covered in the browns, yellows and reds of the leaves of fall, people are sporting pink shirts and bracelets in support of breast cancer this month.
It is likely that we all know someone who has had breast cancer, which is why there are so many foundations and fundraisers geared to raise money for breast cancer research.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and locals show their support with walks and fundraisers. This week there is a “Denim for Dollars” event, which is where schools and their Adopt-a-School partners pay $5 to wear denim to work or school.

Trying to tighten the fiscal belt

Ruston’s Board of Aldermen has a bit of a dilemma. It’s unofficially said it’s willing to help the local Head Start program, but exactly how to do so is a problem.
Just as the board was about to vote in September on the city’s budget for the fiscal year that started yesterday, Alderman Elmore Mayfield asked for an additional $10,000 for Head Start. There’s one allocation of $10,000 already in the budget.
“We’re trying to get these children ready,” Mayfield said, referring to the 340 Lincoln and Union Parish students who participate in the preschool program.
