This has been a great year with our “new” kindergarten, first and second grades! I am so proud of our students, parents and teachers who have made this transition successful. Good luck to our second graders as they become third graders at RES. We are also looking forward to welcoming our new kindergartners and to having returning students. I hope your summer is a good one. Practice your reading and math facts!

Laird: Thumbs up for Bearcats

Ruston High School’s football family has one of its own back on campus.
And in a spinoff of political campaign promotions, Bearcat Nation “approves this message.”
When Brad Laird was announced earlier this year as his prep alma mater’s head gridiron coach, he received a quick endorsement from the RHS faithful.
From members of the selection committee who helped pick him as the successor to his father (Billy Laird) to former legendary players in the program’s history, Stephen Brad Laird was an overwhelming (7-0 vote by the committee) choice to guide the Bearcats.

District 5 tryouts scheduled

in

Tryouts for the Louisiana District 5 baseball team will be held on Saturday and Sunday at two different locations in Ruston.
The summer squad will consist of players 16 years and under and 18 years and under. On Saturday, at the Ruston High School diamond located on Ball Park Road, the tryouts will be for players 16-under starting at 9 a.m.
The Sunday tryouts will be for the 18-under division and are set for J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park beginning at 9 a.m. More information is available by calling District 5 Head Coach Eddie Parkman at 243-2294.

Farmer named top hitter

GRAMBLING — In an otherwise off-and-on season, Darren Farmer and Juan Bueno has helped make for a good ending for the Grambling State University baseball program.
Farmer, a senior outfielder, has been named as the Hitter of the Year and to the second unit of the 2013 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference squad selected by the league’s head coaches.
The Bailey, Miss., product is joined on the second team by Bueno, a junior shortstop from Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico.

Bulldogs start conference home series against UTSA

Louisiana Tech University will wrap up its final three-game series of the 2013 season tonight, as the Bulldogs take on Western Athletic Conference foe UTSA beginning at 6 p.m. at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
The matchup between Tech (19-34, 6-18 WAC) and UTSA (28-23, 12-11 WAC) will be a preview of what’s to come next season, as the Roadrunners will make the switch to Conference USA along with the Bulldogs at the conclusion of this season.

Highly-touted Walter signs with Techsters

Louisiana Tech University women’s Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon has announced that the Lady Techster basketball program has signed junior college point guard Christassia Walter to a national letter of intent.
The 5-8 Walter is ranked as the No. 2 ranked player in the junior college ranks by Bret McCormick’s All-Star Girls Report and the No. 5 ranked played by Dan Olson’s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.

Interment will be at Brearley Cemetery in Dardanelle, AR. on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM Mrs. Johnston died Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Glenwood Hospital in Monroe, LA

Joe Hampton Holman

Joe Hampton Holman died at his home in Ruston May 15, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents, Polly and Drayton Holman, and by his brother, Thomas Bruce Holman. Joe was born on November 5, 1949, in Monroe, Louisiana.

Jeraldine “Jerry” Durrett Mobley

Funeral services for Jeraldine “Jerry” Durrett Mobley, age 85 of Dubach, LA will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, May 17, 2013 at Mineral Springs Baptist Church. Officiating the service will be Rev. Greg Tipton. Interment will follow at Mineral Springs Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Mrs. Mobley was born April 29, 1928 in Choudrant, LA and passed away May 13, 2013 in Ruston, LA. Mrs. Mobley was a very active member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church; she taught Sunday school and was a member of WMU.
