Ellis regional streak snapped

in

College baseball Super Regional action starts today, but for the first time ever former Grambling State University baseball coach Wilbert Ellis will not be serving as a Super Regional tournament director.
NCAA Super Regional Play debuted in 1999 and since then Ellis has travelled the country serving as a director for those tournaments. But the College Baseball Hall of Famer had to bow out this week.
“My sister down in St. Francisville had to have surgery, so I’m going down to be with her,” Ellis said.

Torbush enters ETS coaching race

One connection to Louisiana Tech University is out and another is in with the current head football coaching vacancy at East Tennessee State University.
Taking his name out of the hat on Thursday was Gunter Brewer, a former Cedar Creek High wide receiver and son of former Bulldogs’ head coach Billy Brewer.
Putting his name in the running for the Buccaneers’ job is Carl Torbush, who served as the head coach at Tech in 1987.
Torbush, who was also once the head baseball coach at Southeastern Louisiana University, was the linebackers’ coach at Liberty College in 2012.

Grambling to honor Williams on Saturday

Twenty-five years after he created one of the greatest moments in Super Bowl history, Doug Williams will receive additional accolades for his historic performance.
The former All-American quarterback at Grambling State University will be recognized at the annual “Scholarship Gala” of the Ruston chapter of the school’s National Alumni Association at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Library Events in Ruston.
On Jan. 31, 1988, Williams earned Most Valuable Player honors in leading the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super XXV in San Diego, Calif.

Mr. Johnny William “J.W.” Key

Funeral services for Mr. Johnny William “J.W.” Key, age 88 of Dubach, will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Hico Baptist Church. Officiating the services will be Rev. Carroll Holmes and Rev. Danny Triplet. Burial will follow in Henry Cemetery in Hico under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Key was born September 29, 1924 in Arcola IL and died June 6, 2013 in Ruston. He was a welder for Texas Gas for 36 years and served in the US Army during WWII.

Betty Sue King Dufour

Betty Sue King Dufour, of Ruston, LA went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday June 4th, 2013 at the age of 81. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Barbary (Bob) Joseph Dufour. She is survived by her seven children, Debby Nezat and husband Terry, Robert Dufour and wife Carole, Brenda Dufour Mitchell, Mitch Dufour and wife Terri, Susan Allen and husband Tim, Marcie Dufour Foster, and Don Dufour. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Anne Cook Tabarlet

Anne Cook Tabarlet, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, slipped into eternity to meet her Savior early in the morning on Thursday, June 6, 2013. Greeting her in heaven were her husband of 44 years Dr. Bobby Tabarlet, her parents David and Bess Cook and her brothers Donald and James. College roommate and life-long friend, Lydia David Coleman, was also in the company to greet her. Anne was born in Ruston, LA on June 15, 1930 and graduated from Ruston High School in 1947, Louisiana College in 1951 and received her Master's Degree in Education from LSU in 1958.

James C. Swanner

James C. Swanner, age 75, of Junction City died Thursday, May 30, 2013 at UAMS in Little Rock, AR.  He was born January 14, 1938 to Charles and Mildred Swanner of Junction City.  James served in the US Navy where he served as an electronic technician Third Class N, and was responsible for maintenance of the guided missile system aboard the USS Los Angeles.
