Citrus trees need protection during winter

Over the past few years many homeowners and backyard orchard enthusiasts have purchased citrus trees and have enjoyed the glossy leaves, an abundance of aromatic blooms and the fresh fruit. Success has been rewarding, but only due to the fact that the past mild winter conditions have spared the citrus trees from winter damage resulting from hard freezes. A winter will come when temperatures will drop into the low 20’s or teens and that’s when the freeze damage or tree mortality will occur.

Tech’s Engineering and Science Foundation honors faculty, friends

The Board of Directors of Louisiana Tech University’s Engineering and Science Foundation has presented its 2013 Outstanding Faculty and Friends Awards, honoring faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends associated with the College of Engineering and Science who have shown outstanding commitment to the College or have acted as ambassadors
for the university.
This year, the Foundation chose to recognize faculty members Erez Allouche and Brad Cicciarelli.

Yes, the winless Grambling State Tigers played their best game of the season Saturday in a 23-17 overtime loss to Texas Southern in Robinson Stadium.
But while interim coach Dennis “Dirt” Winston admitted he was proud of his team’s efforts, he said it still wasn’t enough for a team desperate to feel the thrill of victory.
“I don’t believe in moral victories,” Winston said. “I believe in victories period, If we can get a victory, that’s what we want. We want that now, and I think our kids are going to fight hard to get that.

Holtz wants rest, not rust, for Bulldogs

Heading into Louisiana Tech’s second bye week of the season, Bulldogs head football coach Skip Holtz is taking a different approach than the first time.
This time, coming a 23-7 win at Florida International that made the Bulldogs 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Conference USA play, Holtz wants rest without rust.

CUSA announces future bowl game affiliations

IRVING, Texas — Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky and the league’s Board of Directors have confirmed nine bowl affiliations through the 2019 season, securing a minimum of five berths annually and offering fans a number of great destinations between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.

New era brings improvements

Louisiana Tech University is undeniably in the dawn of a new era after new president Les Guice took over on July 1, followed shortly thereafter by the appointment of new athletics director Tommy McClelland.
But Tech has exploded into the future in recent weeks with the exciting announcement of two important new cornerstones for the university’s athletics department.
Big steps have been taken in the journey known as Tech’s “Quest for Excellence,” a capital campaign geared toward greatly enhancing the University’s athletic facilities.

Avoid the holiday debt hangover

Only eight weeks until Christmas! Are you through with your Christmas shopping? I haven’t started mine yet.
Retailers have the Christmas spirit now. Decorations, gifts and holiday ideas are out everywhere you go, and we haven’t gotten through the Thanksgiving holiday.
One thing is for sure, I don’t want a lot of holiday debt.

Be creative with sweet treats this Halloween

Holidays have a weird way of making people nostalgic.
Since I don’t have any children yet, I don’t watch the Disney Channel unless I’m stuck in a doctor’s waiting room with nothing better to do. I’ve reached the age where I’m convinced that children’s television was much better when I was a child, and I don’t want to subject myself to it unnecessarily.
But, when October hits, Disney Channel is one of my favorites. I spent the majority of last Saturday binge watching the “Halloweentown” series, a quartet of Disney Channel movies that premiered while I was still in high school.
