Tech hires Parker as hitting coach

After spending last season as an assistant for the Diamond ’Dogs, Olen Parker returns to head coach Wade Simoneaux’s staff in a different capacity as he is set to take over as a full-time assistant and hitting coach for the Louisiana Tech baseball program.
Parker replaces former hitting coach Fran Andermann, who coached on Simoneaux’s staff for 11 seasons from 2002-2013.

Sportsman’s Jamboree to be held tonight

The 34th Annual Sportsman’s Jamboree will be held tonight at the Thomas Assembly Center at Louisiana Tech University.
The special guest speaker for this year’s jamboree will be nationally known entertainer and hunter Ray Eye from Missouri.
What’s new in outdoor products will be displayed around the rotunda at the TAC and numerous door prizes will be awarded.
Doors open will at 4 p.m. with the actual program beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The event is free to the public.

Sportsman’s Expo set for Saturday

The fourth annual Sportsman’s Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Willie Davis Jr. Recreation Center, located at 116 Cox Ferry Road in Farmerville.
Admission for ages 12 and up is $5 and children 11 and under are free.
There will be approximately 50 vendors along with country music performer, Katie Knight, as the guest announcer for a Duckmen Look-Alike Contest. Prizes will be awarded to the best “Look-Alike” in the adult category (ages 18 and above) and in the youth category (ages 17 and below).

Billy Dean Bryan

Billy Dean Bryan was born November 28, 1939 into the union of Myrtle Mavis Greer of Arcadia and Elvis Bryan of Downsville and died on September 16, 2013 peacefully at home. Bill graduated from Downsville High School and then Louisiana State University. He received a Masters of Business Administration degree from Louisiana Tech University's first MBA class and became a CPA. Bill married Sue Hogg Bryan in 1962 and had three children, Scott, Jeff and Keli. Bill began working in his father's sausage plant, Bryan Sausage, as a teenager and went on to manage the business for several decades.

The Wesley Chapel Water System intends to file an application for federal assistance with the USDA Rural Development for funding of a water system improvemnets project. Prior to incurring the obligations of the proposed loan and/or grant, the system will obtain authorization by vote of its Board of Directors. M.L. Smith transports vessel

At around 8 a.m. this morning, M.L. Smith Tanks and Refractories, located on Louisiana Highway 33 began the transportation of a 30 ton vessel to Arkansas.
Tommy Gregg, engineering manager, said the vessel is 8 feet in diameter and 108 feet long. It will be used as a distillation column for a chemical plant.
Upon pulling out of the business, traffic was backed up along Highway 33 and then again when a turn was being made onto Interstate 20.

Armed robbery

Police are asking for information

At approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday, Ruston Police Department responded to an armed robbery at Circle K on 1705 North Service Rd E.
“The clerk (on duty) said that three black males came in and ordered her to the ground,” Capt. Tim Parker of RPD said.
According to Parker, the men were wearing masks and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the registers. There was at least one handgun present. The men fled the scene and RPD is actively pursuing those responsible for the armed robbery.
“We can’t connect this robbery with any other robbery that has happened as of yet,” Parker said.

Sheriff Buckley’s life remembered

Long-time Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley passed away Tuesday morning after a battle with cancer.
Buckley was diagnosed in May of this year and was undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
“Bob was a good friend and a good sheriff,” said State Sen. Mike Walsworth, “I appreciate all he did for Union Parish and I feel for his family.”
Buckley served as the sheriff of Union Parish for 20 years.

Tech earns Tier One, highest ranking yet

For the third consecutive year, Louisiana Tech University has achieved a Tier One ranking among “National Universities,” according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2014 Best Colleges list released Sept. 10.
Louisiana Tech is one of only two public universities in Louisiana to achieve a Tier One “National Universities” ranking, coming in at a tie for No. 190 — the highest ranking Tech has received from U.S. News & World Report. Louisiana Tech was also the only university in the state to see its national ranking rise over last year, moving up nine spots from the 2013 list.
