Lady Techsters downed by UAB

Louisiana Tech’s second half issues continued Saturday as the Lady Techsters saw Alabama-Birmingham forward Karisma Chapman score 25 points after intermission to lead the Blazers to a 71-62 win at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech (7-17, 2-9) led throughout the opening 20 minutes of play as the Lady Techsters took a 29-27 advantage into the halftime locker room after holding Chapman to only four points.

Former Tech standout Millsap set for tonight’s NBA All-Star Game

For the first time in years, Lincoln Parish will be represented in this year’s NBA All-Star game.
Former Grambling Laboratory High School and Louisiana Tech University basketball standout Paul Millsap, a forward for the Atlanta Hawks, has been named as an Eastern Conference All-Star, selected in voting among the Conference’s coaches.
It marks the first All-Star selection of Millsap’s career.
The 2014 All-Star game takes place tonight at New Orleans Arena.

GSU swept at Texas Southern

The Tigers fell short in their bid for a second straight win Saturday as Grambling State fell 74-71 to Texas Southern in Houston. Antwan Scott, pictured above with the ball earlier this season, led GSU (2-19 overall, 1-11 Southwestern Athletic Conference) with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists. In women’s action, Texas Southern defeated Grambling 84-76. Jasmine Godbolt led GSU with 17 points. The Lady Tigers fell to 8-15 overall and 5-7 in the SWAC.

Cougars defeated by Arcadia, La. New Tech

PLAIN DEALING — Cedar Creek lost 62-26 Friday night at Arcadia before falling 48-42 at La. New Tech on Saturday.
Shilo Perry led Creek against Arcadia with nine points while Jordan Williams topped the Cougars with 15 points against La. New Tech while Perry added 13.
Creek now stands at 4-20 overall and 0-9 in District 1-1A.

GRAMBLING — The Kittens came out winners on Senior Night Friday as Grambling Labortary High School took a District 1-1A win over Ringgold.

Tech baseball falls twice to SLU

Although the Bulldog bats eventually came to life in the eighth inning, the deficit was too much to overcome as Louisiana Tech fell to Southeastern Louisiana, 15-6, Saturday in the second game of the weekend series at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Southeastern (2-0) took advantage of six Tech (0-2) pitchers and plated multiple runs in six different innings to lead by as much as 15-0 up until the eighth inning. A last ditch late-inning rally by the Bulldogs fell short despite Tech scoring six runs off nine hits in the final two innings of play.

Tech softball drops pair

AUSTIN — For the second straight game, Louisiana Tech gave seventh-ranked Kentucky a scare before the Lady Techsters fell 6-3 Saturday at the Texas Classics in Austin.
Tech (2-6) fell earlier in the day to 16th-ranked Texas 7-2 and will face Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne at noon today in the consolation game of the three-day tournament.

Cedar Creek girls keep playoff dreams alive

PLAIN DEALING — Playing their third game in as many days and with a potential playoff berth at stake, Cedar Creek’s girls basketball team knew they had to save their best for last.
And that’s exactly what the Lady Cougars did as they held on for a big 44-43 win over La. New Tech on Saturday.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. —Louisiana Tech senior Trey Hadnot ran a pair of top-10 times in the school’s record books, highlighting LA Tech’s performance at the prestigious Tyson Invitational at the Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville Saturday.

Event raises money for St. Jude

The sixth annual “Kupcakes for Kids” was once again successful in raising money for St. Judes’s Children Research Center as hundreds of cupcakes were served to Lincoln Parish residents inside Community Trust Bank on Friday.
“We always look forward to this fundraiser and I think the community enjoys it, too,” said CTB vice president of public relations Glen Neaville.
Neaville, along with vice president of marketing relations Sharron Schimmel, was instrumental in helping their friend Susan Polk create the fundraiser six years ago.

Waiting continues

ULRWSI looking to bid on property

The president of the Union-Lincoln Regional Water Supply Initiative is still awaiting word from the state on when property in the Old Lake D’Arbonne State Park in Farmerville may be available for bid or purchase as the site of the water treatment plant that’s part of a plan to help the ailing Sparta Aquifer.
“No one has written me or called me about the lake that has any authority,” ULRWSI head Stein Baughman said Friday.
