Monroe mayor qualifies for race

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The field of candidates has grown larger in the special election to fill the 5th District congressional seat representing northeast and central Louisiana, as qualifying entered its second day.
Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, a Democrat, became the fourth candidate to sign up for the Oct. 19 election, when he filed his registration paperwork Today.
He joins Republican state Sen. Neil Riser and Democratic state Reps. Marcus Hunter and Robert Johnson in the race.
The candidate registration period runs until Wednesday evening.

Albritton has served community for 37 years

For the City of Ruston, there is someone who deals with consumer affairs, and connects customers to the appropriate department where they can assess and deal with those issues in a timely manner.
Earl Albritton, 67, the administrative assistant of consumer affairs, has fulfilled this role for Ruston and its citizens for 37 years.
Albritton began working for the city in 1976, when he said he did a little bit of everything. But in a few years, an important need for a specific worker arose.

Baseball bat battery

A Dubach man was arrested early this morning after an altercation landed another man in the hospital.
According to the arrest affidavit, the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 11:27 p.m. Monday night requesting an ambulance and deputies be sent to the Laundromat in Dubach. The call indicated that a man had reportedly been beaten with a baseball bat.

RPAR softball sign-up ends Wednesday

With the Ruston Parks and Recreation fall softball league nearing it’s start, the last day to sign up a new team will be Wednesday. The fee is $280.
There are three leagues: Men’s E Class, Coed and Men’s Church; each requiring that a person be 18 years of age or older to participate.
If those interested couldn’t find a team by the deadline, Korick Wilkerson, recreation services assistant for RPAR, said they are still eligible to play in the softball league.

Still time for late summer fruit harvest

While driving home in the afternoons, I have witnessed the progression of the common elderberry (Sambucus canadensis). These plants bloomed in the spring, displaying a dense, flat-topped cluster of flowers, from June through July. From the white flowers clusters, large clusters of purplish-black berries develop when mature. A wonderful find for someone looking for native fruit to harvest this time of year.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: Parker Thurman

Editors Note: This is the first part of a six-part series highlighting Louisiana Tech students and their internship experiences.
For Parker Thurman, determination paid — literally and figuratively.
Thurman, a senior agricultural business major at Louisiana Tech University, said just one phone call didn’t secure him an internship. Nor did two phone calls.
“I called them. I sent them my resume. I went by there a few times, and finally they called me back,” Thurman, a Calhoun native, said.

Tech soccer preps for season opener

Lady Techsters to open 2013 campaign on Wednesday on road at LSU

The Louisiana Tech soccer team performed an intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday night at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex in preparation for their upcoming season opener at LSU on Wednesday.
Two teams were created, red versus white, for two 30-minute periods with a brief halftime in between.
The red team consisted of Caitlin Updyke, Marjolein Timmermans, Nicole Jaquemet, Taylor Dennis, Alexandra Fiorvento, Annabel Prior, Brittany Beddow, Laura LeFevour, Erica Stewart and Rosie Lethbridge.

RHS season tickets on sale

Ruston High School football season tickets are now on sale.
The cost of a packet of tickets is $43 and includes tickets to the jamboree at West Ouachita and five home games.
Season ticket holders have until Wednesday to reclaim their tickets. There are tickets available for new season ticket holders now.
Bearcat Discount Cards are also available at RHS.

Tech to hold Kids Club signup event

Super 1 Foods of Ruston will host the annual LA Tech Kids Club Signing Day event which is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The LA Tech Kids Club is for young Bulldog and Lady Techster fans in eighth grade and under and an annual membership is only $40 which includes free admission into all Louisiana Tech regular season home sporting events plus many other benefits.
