Festival sports are ‘peachy keen’

In the 98-plus degree Fahrenheit heat that usually accompanies the Louisiana Peach Festival, you would think running, jumping or any kind of physical activity would be the last thing on a participant’s to-do list.
So it made sense when tennis tournament director Lynne Jones decided to hold the annual tennis tournament at night this year.

Techsters add assistant coaches

Louisiana Tech University head women’s basketball coach Teresa Weatherspoon announced Wednesday that she has filled two of her coaching vacancies with the hiring of Mike Ekanem and Drew Miller.
Both Ekanem and Miller will serve as assistant coaches for Weatherspoon. Whostill has one coaching vacancy and the director of basketball operations position to fill.

George Pipes of Ruston passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2013 at Douglas United Methodist Church in Douglas. Officiating the service will be Rev. Jeremy Jones and Rev. Rolly Walker. Interment will follow at Douglas Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Mr. Pipes was born in Dubberly, LA on November 3, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Alvin and Helen Burton Pipes of Dubberly; his brother: Travis Pipes of Minden; his father and mother-in-law: Lee and Maude Smart of Ruston.

Interment will follow at Vienna Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Mrs. Smith was born August 3, 1938 and passed away June 18, 2013. She is survived by her husband: James A. Smith; children: Kenneth D. Smith (Connie); Cynthia T. Frazier (Michael), and Michael L. Smith (Randa) grandchildren: Floyd A. Knox, Bridgett N. Ledford Poole, Leslie N. Smith Womack, Kammi M. Smith, Kristen D.

LEGAL NOTICE
The Village of Choudrant Town Council met in regular session. Present were Mayor Bill Sanderson, Alderman Ricky Maier, Alderman Brandon Williams and guests. Alderman Ragan Aswell was absent. Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Mayor Sanderson. Mayor Sanderson gave prayer. Motion to approve the agenda was made Alderman Williams, seconded by Alderman Maier. Approved. Motion to approve the minutes of May 6, 2013, was made by Alderman Williams, seconded by Alderman Maier. Approved.

Ruston Daily Leader delivery update

Due to Tuesday’s weather, our printing equipment was severely damaged due to a lightning strike. Wednesday’s paper will be delivered Thursday afternoon. Technicians are currently working to repair the equipment. Thursday's paper will be delivered either tonight or Friday. We apologize for any inconvenience and should be on a regular schedule by Friday afternoon.

Lightning struck: Fire caused by severe weather

The Ruston Fire Department received a call at 5:09 p.m. Tuesday in regards to a fire in the 2000 block of Belcara Drive. Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel said units arrived on the scene at 5:19 p.m. and the fire was suppressed by 5:34 p.m. No injuries were reported.
“Our investigation revealed that the fire seemed to have started in the attic from a lightning strike to the structure,” Brazzel said.
He added that 14 personnel and nine apparatuses arrived at the scene of the fire.

Aldermen OK budget

Dubach anticipates $249K in revenue, $317K in expenditures

The town of Dubach began the 2013-14 fiscal year with a list of annual housekeeping items at their meeting on Monday night including approving the year’s budget and appointing several individuals and businesses to perform necessary services.
Council members unanimously — with the exception of Hattie Graham, who was absent — approved the proposed budget for the Lincoln Parish Sales Tax and Use Commission. This budget must be approved by the majority of the members throughout the parish.

Faces in the community: Copeland encouraging parish commerce

With the 2013 Louisiana Peach Festival this week, much attention has been focused on the Ruston Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber works throughout the year to help ensure the Peach Festival is a success. And, this year, they’ve done it with an interim captain at the helm.
Judy Copeland, who has served as the office manager at the Chamber for the past eight years, recently took the position as Interim President when former President Scott Terry stepped down.
