Guice answers higher calling

Minutes before the thunderclouds thickened and the rain began to fall, Les Guice and his family planted a red maple tree on the alumni walkway leading to Louisiana Tech University’s Centennial Plaza.
Thirteen other trees were already growing along the walkway, each tree representing the tenure of a former Tech president. The red maple — Tree No. 14 — belongs to Guice.
The Monroe native who grew up in Bastrop became Tech’s 14th president on July 1. But it wasn’t until his formal investiture this month that things became real in a ceremonial kind of way.

Techsters batter GSU in softball

GRAMBLING — Hailey Winter and Katelynn Hill each drove home two runs to lead Louisiana Tech to a 10-1 run rule win over Grambling State Tuesday afternoon at the GSU Softball Field.
Tech (18-27) improved to 11-0 all-time against the Tigers (11-20) and swept the season series after defeating GSU 4-1 in Ruston in mid-February.
The Lady Techsters recorded 11 hits in the game while scoring runs in each of the first four innings while Pauline Tufi and Bianca Duran limited the Tigers to one run on four hits.

Lady Aggies cruise after strong start

CHOUDRANT — One theory is that the “Big Bang” was the start of our universe.
The Choudrant High School Lady Aggies used an early big bang of their own Tuesday as they took a 7-1 opening round win over Bell City in Class B softball playoff action at the CHS football field.
After opening with a strikeout, Choudrant pushed across six runs in the first inning as the Lady Aggies pulled away early and then let their defense do the rest.
Not that the rest was easy.

Tech QB Young ends football career

Louisiana Tech quarterback Scotty Young has elected to forego his final year of eligibility and end his collegiate football career after obtaining his degree from Louisiana Tech University this summer.
The decision to end his career comes as Young played in seven games making six starts last season for Tech.

OCS edges past Cedar Creek

No. 3 ranked Cedar Creek jumped out to an early lead, but was unable to hold on and lost 8-6 to top-ranked Ouachita Christian on Tuesday.
A wild pitch gave OCS the lead in the fifth inning.
Aaron Hunt racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Cougars. He singled in the second and third innings.
The top of the second saw OCS take an early lead, 1-0.
Cedar Creek quickly matched OCS’ strong inning with a four-run inning of its own in the second.
The Cougars scored on an RBI single by Huff McIntosh, an RBI single by Hunt along with a sacrifice fly by Jacob Antee.

Lady Cougars blast Montgomery, 13-0

Cedar Creek rolled to the second round of the Class 1A softball playoffs Tuesday as the Lady Cougars topped Montgomery 13-0 at home.
The game started slow before Cedar Creek scored four runs in the third before igniting for a nine-run fourth inning to end the game early.
Cecilia Akin led the Lady Cougars with three hits and one RBI.
Caley Pyles, Haley Gray, Halie Robinson, Anna Larr Roberson each added two hits for the Lady Cougars while . Harlie Robinson had one hit for Cedar Creek.
Gray, Roberson, and Harlie Robinson each recorded one RBI for the Lady Cougars.
