RPAR getting ready for fall softball season

In softball, there is no place like home plate. After a successful summer softball league with 26 teams (seven more teams then last fall) competing in three divisions, the Fall Softball League is about ready to get under way.
Again, Ruston Parks and Recreation will offer three divisions: Men’s E Class, Coed and Men’s Church. Softballs will be provided by RPAR and USSSA rules will be followed again this season.
The team fees remain at $280 and are due Aug. 21. Payments can be made at the RPAR office located at 605 James St. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Watch out for heat waves

As summer temperatures continue to rise area residents should be aware of the dangers that can be caused from becoming overheated.
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission warns motorists not to leave children alone in closed vehicles for even a few minutes.

'Skinny fat' all new health risk

When you’ve been overweight for pretty much your entire life, it’s easy to fall into the the trap of thinking that everyone who is thin is healthy.
Sure, tons of thin people have assured me that being thin does not mean healthy. And, I’ve watched lots of thin people eat me under the table and not exercise a second more than me. But, it’s still hard to believe. Especially when you watch those people who are lucky enough to eat nothing but fast food all day and stay thin.
However, science is something with which I have a hard time arguing.

Lifting up literacy

Summer Day Camp promotes reading skills

In June, Summer Literacy Day Camp was held at Glen View Elementary School for qualifying students entering first grade in Fall 2013.
The program was made possible due to a generous donation from the Ewing Foundation.
During each three hour instructional day, participants worked on sight word recognition and early literacy skills such as phonemic segmentation and decoding/blending.

Ruston man missing

Family asks for help in locating Verret

A Ruston family is asking for help in locating a family member they say has been missing since Friday.
Jonathan Verret, 18, of Ruston, was last seen Friday in the northeast Los Angeles area. He was driving a red Honda Accord with Louisiana license plate number TKM-801. Family members said they are unsure whether he has returned to Louisiana or not.
Verret is 5-10 and 130-140 pounds with black hair.
Anyone with information on Verret is asked to call his family at 318-777-9900.

Tech expands research partnerships

Mobile vet rolls into Lincoln Parish

Animal lovers who don’t have time to visit the vet are now in luck as Thomas Mobile Veterinary Clinic is in the business of making house calls.
After selling his nine-year-old veterinary practice in 2008, Tyler Thomas was visiting a veterinary conference in Las Vegas, Nev., when he saw a mobile vet unit.
“I thought about it for a year, and then purchased a mobile vet unit in January 2012.” Thomas said. “It arrived at the end of March (2012), and started in April (2012).”

Leach to compete in Miss America in September

The Miss Louisiana Organization is excited to announce that Miss Spirit of the Ouachita and West Monroe native Jaden Leach was crowned Miss Louisiana 2013.
The Miss Louisiana Pageant was held at the Monroe Civic Center’s W.L. “Jack” Howard Theater in Monroe with a record crowd witnessing the live show unfold as the rest of the state watched on television.
This year’s pageant marked the 50th Anniversary of the Miss Louisiana Pageant in Monroe.

Scouts assist in flag ceremony

Cub Scouts from Pack 59 (pictured in front) and Boy Scouts from Troop 45 (back), both based in Ruston, recently assisted VFW Post 3615 in a ceremony to retire more than 75 flags. The ceremony was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Ruston on Flag Day.

There’s no place like home

Holtz prepared for long stay with Bulldogs

Head football coach Skip Holtz has been on the job at Louisiana Tech University for six months and has been well received by Ruston and the entire community.
Holtz was announced as the new head coach in December 2012 and has worked nonstop ever since in preparations for the upcoming football season.
“There’s an unbelievable amount of positives about Louisiana Tech,” Holtz said. “The sky is the limit for what we want to accomplish here in Ruston.”
