Create! Annual arts tour fun for all ages

For more than a decade the North Central Louisiana Arts Council has provided Lincoln Parish and surrounding areas with a conglomeration of art.
The 16th annual Holiday Arts Tour — Create! is not any different than the previous years that the tour has been put on.
However, this year does have a few new items on the agenda.
Jessica Slaughter, executive director for NCLAC, said this year’s tour has a larger number of visual artists than last year.

Remembering that fateful day

I was 9 years old when President Kennedy was assassinated. It was the Friday we got out of school for Thanksgiving break. The day was cold and only partly sunny.
Early that afternoon somebody in the eighth grade class upstairs in the old A. E. Phillips School found out what happened in Dallas.
They told their teacher, who told our principal who came down the hall and told my fourth-grade teacher, Miss McCullin. Miss McCullin didn’t tell us. But somehow I found out.

Scouting parish’s prep playoff opponents

The Ruston Bearcats continue their playoff march Friday while the Cedar Creek Cougars join in on the action.
Ruston will play a second-round Class 5A contest at 10-1 Destrehan while Cedar Creek will play host to Catholic Point Coupee after sitting out the first round of the Division IV playoffs with a bye.
The Bearcats stand at 8-3 after defeating District 2-5A rival Natchitoches Central 31-7 last week in first-round action.

Grambling women to host Texas State

Following four straight road games, the Grambling State University Lady Tigers basketball team play at home for the first time this season as they host Texas College at 7 p.m. tonight at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
The 1-3 Lady Tigers are coming off a 95-64 loss at Texas Christian on Monday in which senior guard and Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Joanna Miller led the Lady Tigers with 28 points.
Senior guard Tyler Anderson was also strong in that game with a 20-point performance of her own.

Ruston CC teams finish in state Top 10

in

The Ruston Bearcats ran for a pair of Top 10 finishes in the Louisiana Class 5A state Cross Country Championships Tuesday at Northwestern State University Natchitoches, with the girls finishing in seventh place overall and the boys ending up in 10th place.
Adazia Austin finished 12th overall for the Ruston girls with a time of 20:06.58 while Taryn Stark placed 49th with a time of 21:34.92.

Techsters preparing for LSU

Louisiana Tech junior Whitney Frazier and the Lady Techsters will host in-state rival LSU and the 15th ranked Tigers this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center in the first game of a basketball-football doubleheader in Ruston. That evening Skip Holtz and the Bulldogs host Tulsa in the final home game of the season as 23 seniors will be playing their final game at Joe Aillet. It’s Faith and Family Day in Ruston as the Rhett Walker Band will be playing a free concert in the TAC between the two games starting at 3:30 p.m.

Dunkin’ ’Dogs to start five game road swing

Louisiana Tech will be away from Ruston for the next two weeks, beginning a five-game road swing on Wednesday night as they travel to take on Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. inside the Farris Center.
A ‘Welcome Home’ banner might as well be displayed for guards Kenyon McNeail and Raheem Appleby. McNeail hails from Conway, home of the UCA campus, and Appleby from nearby Jacksonville.
The two upperclassman will lead Tech (1-1) into a return game versus Central Arkansas (1-1) after the Bulldogs and Bears met up on Feb. 18, 2012, in the Sears BracketBuster event.

Eleven Louisiana Tech athletes pick up degrees

Eleven Louisiana Tech student-athletes from six different sports earned degrees during the University’s fall commencement exercises held at the Thomas Assembly Center this past Saturday in Ruston.
A total of five Bulldog football players earned their degrees this fall quarter, including D.J. Banks (Finance), Matthew Conger (Forestry), Vince Cano (Political Science), Jacarri Jackson (Sociology) and Carter Street (Finance). Thomas Graham, who is the Director of Football Recruiting and Alumni Relations, also received his master’s degree in counseling and guidance.

Memorial services for George Allen Rogers, age 73, of Troup, Texas formerly of Ruston, LA will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, LA. Mr. Rogers was born September 13, 1940 in Pine Bluff Arkansas, and passed away Monday, November 18, 2013. He is preceded in death by his first wife: Angie Rogers. Mr.
