Buckley to be honored with benefit

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Union Parish will be honoring its long time sheriff with a benefit put on by his friends and family. The Bob Buckley benefit will be held at 116 Cox Ferry Road. in Farmerville.
Buckley passed away on Sept. 17 after a battle with cancer. He was the Union Parish Sheriff for 25 years.
All proceeds will go to Buckley’s medical bills that have accumulated since his sickness, and whatever is left will go to a scholarship fund for students who are going to go into law enforcement.

‘Angel in the Pawnshop’ hits the stage Oct. 3

Ruston Community Theatre is beginning its 36th season of providing theatrical stage performances for Ruston and the surrounding areas. This year we are undertaking five productions instead of our typical four.
Our season begins with a drama called Angel in the Pawnshop directed by Mitch Dufour. The play shows next week at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3, 4, and 5 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 6.

Grambling preparing for Lamar

Tigers to be without former defensive line coach Ezil Bibbs, who was fired Wednesday

GRAMBLING — Winless Grambling State University gets another chance at its first victory Saturday as the Tigers play host to Lamar in a 6 p.m. contest at Robinson Stadium.
The Tigers will be without the services of former defensive line coach Ezil Bibbs, who was fired on Wednesday.
Reports say Bibbs was notified of his termination by email.

Bulldogs set to battle Army in Dallas

All three parish teams are on the road for 7 p.m. games tonight as Ruston takes on Haughton, Cedar Creek travels to West Ouachita and Grambling Lab battles Delhi Charter.
Following are preview capsules on each game:
Ruston (2-1) at Haughton (3-0)
Kickoff: 7 p.m.; Haughton
Things get tough for the Bearcats, winners of two straight, as they hit the road to face undefeated Haughton.
Class 5A Haughton has three wins over 4A teams after taking down Woodlawn, 49-8, Benton 52-14 and Minden 34-7.
Cedar Creek (2-1) at W. Ouachita (2-1)
Kickoff: 7 p.m.; Cadeville

Techsters to launch C-USA play at home

Louisiana Tech Volleyball has the honor of hosting the first two Conference USA matches in the program’s history as league play is set to commence beginning with a 7 p.m. match tonight against the visiting UTEP Miners in the Thomas Assembly Center.
Conference action will resume at 1 p.m. Sunday as the Lady Techsters host former Western Athletic Conference foe turned C-USA mate UTSA in an afternoon match inside the TAC.

Tech soccer to host Tulsa

The much-anticipated Conference USA season starts on at 7 p.m. tonight with Louisiana Tech opening up on the road against Tulsa at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
This marks the first ever match for Tech (5-4-1) in C-USA which opens its 19th season of women’s soccer competition on Friday with all 16 teams squaring off in league action.

Volunteers show support for D.A.R.T

For the last nine years, Ruston’s Domestic Abuse Resistance Team has had a Pumpkin Patch fundraiser in order to raise money for the fight against domestic abuse. An 18-wheeler full of pumpkins will be unloading at Townsend House soon. There will be an army of volunteers unloading all of the pumpkins and they just need us to go buy one.
October is right around the corner, and as we fall into the autumn season, people are gearing up for their Domestic Abuse Awareness Month events. So, it is no surprise that D.A.R.T is having their annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser.

Finding a ring inside a candle

Can you imagine burning a candle and somewhere in the wax is a tiny plastic bag containing a ring valued at $10, $100, $1,000 or even $5,000?
My guess would be no, since that was my original reaction. But there is a company, a legitimate company — Diamond Candles.
According to their website, the business got started when David and Brenda were nearing their first anniversary.
