Diamond ’Dogs to host McNeese State

After a grueling first three weeks of the season, Louisiana Tech will wrap up its 12-game home stand with a two-game midweek series against in-state foe McNeese State beginning at 6 p.m. today at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
The second game with the Cowboys was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, but has now been moved up to a 4 p.m. first pitch.

NORMAN, Okla. — Louisiana Tech head coach Mark Montgomery didn’t shy away from competition when making out the 2014 Lady Techsters softball schedule.
Having already played four games against Top 25 teams this year, the Lady Techsters will turn their attention to defending national champion and 13th-ranked Oklahoma at 3 p.m. today, weather permitting.

Tech leads Argent Financial Classic entering final day

CHOUDRANT — Sophomore Victor Lange led Louisiana Tech with a 1-under-par 71 Monday as the Bulldogs enter today’s final round with a one-stroke lead over North Texas at the Argent Financial Classic hosted at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant.
Lange is only one stroke behind co-leaders Pep Angles (Central Arkansas) and Calum Hill (UL-Monroe) who lead with a pair of identical 2-under-par 70 scores. In all, Louisiana Tech has three players in the top 10 following the first round of competition.
Overall Tech leads with a 5-over-par (293) team score after one round of play.

Alexander wins state crown

Alison Alexander, daughter of Hank and Jodie Alexander, of Ruston, was selected as the winner for the Louisiana’s 34th Annual Homecoming Queen Selection, which was held Saturday at the Hilton Jackson in Jackson, Miss. She is also the current Simsboro High School Homecoming Queen. As Louisiana’s 2014 Homecoming Queen, she will receive a cash scholarship, plus an all-expense-paid trip to the national finals to compete with the queens from the other states for America’s Homecoming Queen.

Selecting a pomegranate cultivar for fruit production

Pomegranate originated in southern Asia and was widely cultivated from India to the Mediterranean during ancient times. From Spain, it was introduced into the Americas by Spanish missionaries during the 16th century. Its colorful, orange-red flowers and dense, bushy growth habit make pomegranate an attractive ornamental.
It was once a popular ornamental and fruiting shrub in the Southern states, but over the years its use has declined. Recently, a resurgence of the old garden favorite has delighted and frustrated many gardeners.
