NEW ORLEANS — Top-seeded Alabama State held on to defeat Grambling State in an extra-inning scorefest Monday as the Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament opened play at the Urban Youth Academy’s Wesley Barrow Stadium.
It was a chess match of a game, as the Hornets led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a double by Richard Amion, who advanced to third base on a groundout. At only 3 years old, Sanderson was diagnosed with cancer and told that St. Jude Children’s Research hospital would be his best chance of survival.
“We immediately hit the road and got into Memphis in the middle of the night,” Sanderson said. “They were waiting there for us to come in. At 3 I didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation, but I knew that these people treated me and my family incredibly.”
