Examining effects of the recent ice event on plants

It has been a few years since we have had a winter like this year. Temperatures have been well below average for most of the “winter months” and wintery precipitation has been experienced several times over the winter. These conditions will have an effect on established landscape plants, to what extent is not certain. The extent of the effect may not be apparent until re-growth starts in the spring.

Pet Savers of Shreveport came to the rescue

Unless you have formed a relationship with a pet, you will never understand what a pet lover goes through when they are faced with the loss of a pet whether by death or not being allowed to keep a pet in an unwelcome environment such as a nursing home or rental unit.
When I was younger, I didn’t form close bonds to animals, but as I have gotten older I’ve learned the value of a pet because pets can be so intuitive and be more demonstrative than people, often providing a sense of well being for whatever reason.

Club News: Littera Club

The February meeting of Littera Club was held in the Turkey Creek Road home of Kathey Roane. Her co-hostesses were Carolyn Russell and Emily Baugh.
A Valentine’s Day theme was carried out in the home and the refreshments. Each member was given a numbered Valentine as she arrived to be used when the door prize was drawn.
The members and guests, Sheriff Mike Stone, Jim Tuten, Joy Ryan and Julia Boddie, were welcomed by the President Emily Baugh, who presented each member with a name tag with a Valentine’s message.

All-Star game highlights parish

The NBA All-Star game played Sunday night not only provided a national spotlight for the state — Lincoln Parish got some primetime publicity, too.
This year’s game was played in the New Orleans Arena, and Ruston was the recipient of not only one, but two “shout outs” thanks to a pair of hoops standouts that consider Lincoln Parish home.
One came when Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Karl Malone attended the game and was shown on national television wearing a Louisiana Tech University baseball cap.

Kids take a trip through the body

What really happens to that sandwich you eat after you swallow it? Students at Alma J. Brown will find out as they tour the Louisiana Body Walk exhibit on Friday.
The Louisiana Body Walk is an exhibit that travels the state to teach students the importance of adopting healthy behaviors. It is part of an innovative program sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation and the LSU AgCenter.

Reflections with time

As winter quarter is swiftly coming to a close, I can’t help but think of the concept of time. It is something so real and measurable, and yet intangible. The only way it seems within your grasp is when it is slipping away.
It seems like last week that I was making 2013’s New Year’s resolutions. How can a year have elapsed in what seems like a week? It almost doesn’t seem fair, especially when there are those days that seem to drag on for an eternity.

Mary Alice Davis

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Alice Davis, age 82 of Dubach, will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Hico Baptist Church in Hico. Officiating the service will be Brother Don Cardin. Burial will follow in Sharon Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Davis was born March 1, 1931 in Hico to James Henry Carter and Ruby Green Carter. She died February 15, 2014 in Baton Rouge.  Mrs. Davis was a bookkeeper for many years and a member of Hico Baptist Church. In her spare time, Mrs.

MINUTES. CITY OF GRAMBLING, GRAMBLING, LOUISIANA. Monthly Meeting January 9, 2014 Mayor Edward R. Jones opened the regular session of the Grambling City Council at 6: 00 p.m. at Grambling City Hall. Mr. William Arrington offered the invocation and led the council and congregation into the Pledge of Allegiance. Present were the following Council members: Birdex Copeland, Jr., Yanise Days, Cathy Holmes, Roy Jackson, and Cullen Jackson. Absent: None. It was moved by Council member Roy Jackson and seconded by Council member Birdex Copeland, Jr.
