When I was a kid, the women on TV that I looked up to were not the ones running (and bouncing) up and down the beach on Baywatch. They weren’t the girls with the latest fashion and never-ending boyfriend drama on Beverly Hills 90210.
They wore suits, they spoke with clarity, their hair was meticulously coiffed and they wanted to get to the bottom of things — I looked up to reporters.

Tech softballer earns Spirit of Service award

Louisiana Tech junior outfielder Janine Godwin was one of only 16 student-athletes from Conference USA to earn the C-USA Spring Spirit of Service Award which was announced by league commissioner Britton Banowsky today.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.

Tech relay team 12th in NCAAs

EUGENE, Ore. — It was a déjà vu moment for Louisiana Tech’s 4x100-meter relay team Wednesday as the squad recorded a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.
The Bulldog relay squad of Jarvis Gotch, Trey Hadnot, Devin Henderson and Dennis Richardson ran 39.54, the seventh-fastest time in school history and a hundredth of a second (0.01) away from a season best.

Faith helped lead Washington to HOF induction

On June 21, Lionel Washington will be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
Three decades ago, there was another honor which became a major influence in Washington’s subsequent achievements.
In 1984, Washington’s home town of Lutcher, where he’d starred for the Bulldogs before going on to do the same at Tulane, changed the name of Weil Street, the one he’d grown up on, to Lionel Washington Avenue.

Tech announces spring honor students

Louisiana Tech has announced the names of students on its spring quarter President’s and Dean’s honor lists.
Students whose names are followed by an asterisk earned recognition as members of the President’s Honor List. That distinction signifies achievement of at least a 3.8 academic grade point average on a minimum of nine semester hours completed (100-level or higher), with no grade lower than a B.

Peden, McElya to join in holy matrimony

Eve Riser Peden and Keith Peden, of Pearland, Texas, formerly of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Devin Danielle Peden, of Pearland, Texas, to Christopher Levi McElya, of Pearland, Texas.

Devin is the granddaughter of Golda Pray Riser, of Choudrant, the late Sammy Riser, and Alice and Bob Peden, of Ruston.

Chris is the son of Susan and John McElya, of Pearland, Texas. He is the grandson of Lucille Dabbs, of Pearland, Texas, the late Billy Dabbs, and the late Marjorie and Fred McElya.

Lamkin, Brunson to wed

Janie and Harrel Lamkin, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching wedding of their daughter Anna Elizabeth Lamkin, of Ruston, to Jacob Michael Brunson, of Ruston.

Anna is the granddaughter of Bille Jean Lamkin, the late Elton Lamkin and the late Nancy and Wayne Hedgepeth.

Jacob is the son of Ann and Daren Brunson, of Ruston. He is the grandson of Elaine and Johnnie Brunson and Carolyn and Ray Williams.

Johnston, Carter to marry in October

Chuck and Melinda Johnston, of Eros, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching wedding of their son Chad Johnston, of Eros, to Nicole Carter, of West Monroe, daughter of Paul and LaWana Carter, of Meridian, Mississippi.

Chad is the grandson of Charles and Helen Johnston, of West Monroe, and the late Henry and Kate Everritt.

Nicole is the granddaughter of Robert and Ollie Goza, of Junction City, Arkansas, Alice Kitchens, of Marysville, and the late Robert Reddin.

The couple plans to wed Oct. 25 in Dubach. The family will be making their home in West Monroe.

Interment will follow at Ware's Chapel near Haynesville, LA. at 3:30 P.M. Visitation will be Friday, June 13, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Grace United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
