Bearcats football banquet tickets currently on sale

Tickets for the annual Ruston High School football banquet are on sale now and can be purchased from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. weekdays from Virginia Rainwater in the RHS athletics office.
The tickets will be on sale through Jan. 24 and must be bought in advance — no tickets will be sold at the door.
Ticket cost is $20 each.
The annual Ruston High School football banquet, sponsored by the Ruston High School Booster Club, will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Louisiana Tech Student Center.

LPPJ elects new officers, passes motion to join in bid on land near Lake D’Arbonne

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury elected its officers for 2014 to begin Tuesday’s monthly meeting at the Lincoln Parish Courthouse.
District 2 representative Hazel Hunter was elected president while District 5’s David Hammons will serve as vice president. Bobby Gray was elected to continued his role as the LPPJ’s treasurer.
“We are a team and we are all about unity, fairness and togetherness,” Hunter told fellow jurors upon being elected.

Mayor is Russ Award winner

Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth has been named this year’s winner of the Robert E. Russ award, the highest honor given by the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.
This award recognized the contributions the recipient has made to advancing the community.
The 2014 Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, presented by First National Bank, will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Ruston Civic Center.
During the event, community awards will be presented on behalf of various groups. Today, the official results for the majority of the awards are being announced.

Tri-state membership rodeo on tap Saturday

Rodeo lovers in Lincoln Parish and surrounding areas will have a chance to see cowboys and cowgirls showcase their skills.
J.E. Jordan, a stock contractor, will be providing the livestock for the rodeo.
“We will have all of the big events — barrel racing, bull riding, roping — you name it,” he said. “A couple of the bulls have actually been to the PBR World Finals — Toy Soldier in 2011 and Range War in 2011. That is a big draw for a lot of guys.”
Also on hand for the events will be legendary rodeo clown Rudy Burns, Jordan said.

Variety of Arts Academy classes available

I have all sorts of news for you in today’s Art Talk. First up is an Arts Academy class to be offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday.
This will be taught by Rachel Johnston, and will be for students ages 7-12. Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Lincoln Parish students will be out of school. Students will be working on a color-study collage, as well as other projects.
The fee for the day is $25 for NCLAC members, $30 for non-members. All supplies are included, but students should bring a sack lunch.

Credit card scam targets utility customers

It’s the post-holiday season and it’s cold — the perfect combination for scam artists aiming to steal money from area gas and electric utility customers.
Scammers are back on the attack and they are targeting not only residential customers but also business customers, according to the Better Business Bureau of Northeast Louisiana. Here’s how the scam works:

Community recognizes MLK

In remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. we set aside time each year to remember what he did for our country in terms of civil rights.
Each of our local universities does a wonderful job of remembering MLK.
Louisiana Tech University will hold a noon service Monday in the Ruston Civic Center. This event will be preceded by a service-learning project titled “A Walk for Education,” and will be led by our local National Society of Black Engineers.
