LCDBG Application Available for Review
The Village of Simsboro announces that an application for the FY 2014/2015 Louisiana Community Development Block Grant (LCDBG) funds will be submitted for the following:
Activity: LCDBG funds will be used to reconstruct and rehabilitate streets within the Village.
Objective: To provide street improvements to four (4) streets within the target areas identified.

GSU football furor ceases for now

James: ‘We’ll keep moving things in the right direction for all of our athletes’

As he prepared to journey to Baton Rouge to meet with the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors today, Grambling State University President Frank G. Pogue expressed his pleasure that on Monday evening the university’s football team returned to practice and said he was happy that GSU will finish the fall football season.
The football team’s return ended a near week of boycotts in which the team refused to travel to Jackson State University, causing GSU to have to forfeit that contest.

‘Hall of Heroes’ exhibit set

The Lincoln Parish Library is showing their support for troops throughout the entire month of November.
Opening on Veterans day, the “Hall of Heroes” exhibit will be on display in the Chautauqua Gallery. Photos of veterans or current military personnel will be posted throughout the exhibit.
“My goal is to have the hallway covered with veterans’ photos,” Emily Arnold, the library’s programming coordinator, said.
The public is invited to submit photos of local veterans and complete information sheets containing information about the veteran, years of service and branch.

Firefighters work to douse flames at residence

Early reports indicate that a fire on Louisiana Highway 3072 will likely result in a total loss. Lincoln Parish and Ruston Fire Department officials were still on scene as of deadline, and no further information was available as to the cause or extent of the fire. It is known that the house was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters first received the call at approximately 9 a.m. today. At least two residents were on scene at the time of the fire, but no information concerning their condition was available at press time.

Tech rated in Top 5 for math whizzes

Business Insider, a news and information website providing financial, tech, entertainment, media and digital industry analysis and commentary, has ranked Louisiana Tech University No. 5 in the nation in its list of the “The 10 Best Colleges for Math Whizzes” released Friday.
Tech was the only university in Louisiana and the highest ranked institution in the southern United States. The University of Illinois topped the list followed by Michigan State University, Lebanon Valley College (Pa.), Illinois Institute of Technology and Tech.

Northwood Drive attic catches on fire

At 2:16 p.m. Monday, Ruston Fire Department received a 911 call for a possible house fire on Northwood Drive caused by oversized light bulbs in a light fixture.
Eric Brazzel, public education officer for RFD, said upon arriving at the house, firefighters found light smoke coming from the residence and the fire in the attic.

Preparing a winter habitat for birds

With extreme weather affecting the northern plains early, I suspect the winter bird population will be arriving early this year. Wintering birds have somewhat different habitat needs than summer nesting birds and now is the time to get the backyard ready to meet their winter needs. Weather is unpredictable and a prepared site will ensure that the area provides the required survival needs of bird populations whenever harsh conditions begin.

Matthews speaks to Lions Club

At the noon meeting of the Ruston Lions Club on Oct. 15, the Lincoln Parish Geographic Information System Director Jackson Matthews presented an informative program regarding the mapping of Lincoln Parish. The GIS is connected to all aspects of parish government as well as the city of Ruston.
