Summitt adds Burton, Thompson to staff

Louisiana Tech head coach Tyler Summitt announced two new additions to his staff as Eric Burton and Ashley Thompson have both joined the Lady Techster basketball program.
Burton will serve as the director of basketball operations and video coordinator while Thompson will service as the multimedia and creative services associate for the program’s social media accounts.

LPDC garden grows success

Lincoln Parish Detention Center Warden Jim Tuten had several things in mind when he decided he wanted inmates to attempt to grow a vegetable garden.
If the garden was made, Tuten reasoned, some of the harvest could be served in the jail cafeteria, thus lowering the facility’s grocery bill. And, if the harvest was really good, excess vegetables could be sold, and the income put toward purchase of items benefitting the inmates, Tuten figured.

By reading this headline, one would probably assume I’m being snarky. But, think of it in a more literal sense and you’ll begin to understand the context of this column.
Everyone makes mistakes. Some small. Some big. Some, in our judicial system’s eyes, are unforgiveable.
It’s hard to change and even harder to be given a second chance.

AgCenter starts building new facility at 4-H Camp

Project at Camp Grant Walker expected to be completed by early 2015

POLLOCK — LSU AgCenter officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 20 for the new multipurpose pavilion at 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The project is expected to be completed by early 2015.
Randy Ewing, former state senator, said he was chosen to lead a fundraising drive to secure the $1.6 million needed to build the project in 2008 in the midst of a recession.
Ewing, whose family made a contribution in memory of his father, said the pavilion is an investment in the future.
“The building will serve generations to come,” he said.

Organization raises awareness for HIV

June 27th is National HIV Testing Day. It is an annual observance to promote HIV testing created in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS to spread the “Take the Test, Take Control” message across the country.
HIV can affect anyone regardless of age, race/ethnicity, education or geographic location. Of the estimated 1.1 million people in the United States living with HIV, almost 1 in 6 is unaware of their infection.
