Keep your holiday table safe

The holiday season is a time for celebrating with friends and family. Don’t let your holiday be a time to remember because of a foodborne illness. To keep your holiday safe follow these four simple steps.
• Clean and wash hands and surfaces often. Bacteria can spread throughout the kitchen and get onto cutting boards, utensils, sponges and counter tops. You should:
• Wash your hands with hot soapy water before handing food and after using the bathroom.

A discussion on the concept of charters

Earlier this month, the Lincoln Parish School Board was faced with a historic decision — to charter or not to charter.
In October, the LPSB received their first ever charter school application. Since they’d never dealt with one, they had to do a bit of research on the subject. Eventually, earlier this month, the board made the best possible decision by denying the request.

Ring around the rosies a pocket full of … Bulldog quarterbacks?
That’s the rhyme playing through Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz’s head after playing three signal callers during a dismal offensive performance in Louisiana Tech’s loss at Rice.
The numbers tell the story.
Tech quarterbacks combined for only 181 passing yards against the Owls, with starter Ryan Higgins hitting on nine-of-15 attempts for 138 yards with a touchdown and interception and Scotty Young connecting on six-of-15 passes for 43 yards and an interception.

Tech bowling team third in Hornet Classic

The Louisiana Tech bowling team wrapped a weekend full of competition Sunday, as the team posted a third place finish in the Hornet Classic hosted by Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala.
Tech opened tournament play Friday with two opening victories over Southern University and Texas Southern, but the Lady Techsters faltered in the following matches with losses to Alabama A&M and Florida A&M University.

Choudrant girls state runners-up

Aggie’s boys squad, Cedar Creek teams make Top 5 finishes

Choudrant High School’s girls cross country were runners up Monday in Class B state championship action in Natchitoches.
The Choudrant boys teams finished fourth overall.
Choudrant’s Lady Aggies totaled 91 points, 21 behind champion Pitkin with 70.
Marrisa Bennett turned in the best showing for the Lady Aggies, placed third in individual standings with a time of 20:49.17.
Choudrant’s boys team totaled 116 points, behind champion Patrick Taylor Academy (56), Anacoco (88) and Episcopal of Acadiana (112).

Tech preparing for hoops, gridiron doubleheader

Louisiana Tech fans will have an opportunity to experience a basketball-football doubleheader Saturday when the Lady Techsters host in-state rival LSU and the Bulldogs welcome Conference USA foe Tulsa.
Teresa Weatherspoon and the Lady Techsters will tipoff against LSU at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center as fans can watch the two most storied women’s programs in the state of Louisiana. The two programs have combined for 49 NCAA Tournament appearances (27 by LA Tech, 22 by LSU) and 15 NCAA Final Fours (10 by Tech, 5 by LSU).

Mr. Roy Gene Hastings

Funeral services for Mr. Roy Gene Hastings, age 69 of Dubach, will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at South Parkway Church in Ruston. Pastor Chris Witt will officiate the service. Graveside services will be held Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Forrest Park Cemetery in Forrest Park, AR. Services are under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Ruston.

Neil Fussell, Jr.

Funeral services will be held for Neil Fussell, Jr., 80, at the Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Lisbon on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Larry Sellers, officiating. Interment will follow at Rocky Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 405 E. 5th St. on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Mr. Fussell was born Jan. 13, 1933 in Winnsboro to Nerious Oneil Fussell and Georgia Herlong Fussell. He entered into rest Sunday, November 17th at his home following a sudden illness. Mr. Fussell was a retired Supervisor from Dow Chemical with 25 years of service.

Graveside services for Theon McGee, age 95, of Shreveport formerly of Bernice will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Bernice City Cemetery in Bernice LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Officating the service will be Rev. Lamar Skinner.

Local barns open to wedding parties

Residents of Lincoln Parish now have unique venues for their weddings almost all year round — barns.
Charlotte Naff, manager of Shenandoah Stables Productions in Vienna, said this business began by accident.
“We have had so many people ask to have their weddings here, so we decided to let them come on,” Naff said. “We provide the atmosphere and they go with it.”
Naff said barn weddings are for cowgirls who want the country atmosphere.
“It is so much fun to watch,” Naff said. “The people who have their weddings here decorate with love.”
