Groups join together to celebrate local arts

You may be familiar with Louisiana Tech University’s annual summer orientation program, where loads of incoming freshmen and their parents descend upon our community.
This year the university, the City of Ruston, our hard-working Convention and Visitors Bureau and numerous downtown business owners have teamed up to make orientation an even richer experience. Forty-four downtown merchants have agreed to stay open late on four dates this summer, two of which are still to come on July 9 and 30.

GSU gets funding approval for new health/wellness facility

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University students will once again have a campus facility where they can work out, attend exercise sessions and swim in a building of their own.
GSU President Frank G. Pogue announced that the institution has received final, official approval to renovate a 33,279-square-foot building constructed in 1993 and a natatorium.

Barnes Portraiture has released the names of the winners of their annual Peach Festival Baby Photo contest. The winners are:
Most Photogenic 0-6 months
First place — Ryan Wyatt, daughter of Ashley and Justin Wyatt, of Jonesboro.
Second place — Samuel Frost III, son of Erica Spencer and Samuel Frost Jr., of Grambling.
Third place — Braleigh Burch, daughter of Betsy Doyle and Gilland Burch, of Ruston.
Most Photogenic 7-12 months
First place — Emily Walker, daughter of Katherine and Jason Walker, of Ruston.
Second place — Avery Moss, daughter of Alexis Moss, of Arcadia.

Scholarship awarded to senior

RHS student receives annual J.P. Fitzmorris award

The J.P. Fitzmorris Memorial Scholarship was recently awarded to Ruston High School senior, Taylor Brazzel. This scholarship is given in memory of J.P. Fitzmorris, a 1999 honors graduate of Ruston High School who lettered in academics, baseball, football and track.

Rolling through disaster relief

Rolling Hills Ministries in Ruston is much more than a thrift store. For some, it’s a lifesaver.
Since the late ’90s, associates of the ministry have been involved in disaster relief programs. Since the Rolling Hills complex was opened in the early 2000s, it has become a hub for disaster relief supplies, facilities and training.
There are more than 1,000 volunteers in North Louisiana involved in the Rolling Hills disaster relief ministry.

Breast-feeding a healthy choice

Being out of pocket for the past six weeks has given me an unearthly amount of time to browse the Internet via my phone at all hours of the day and night.
Starting with Facebook as most people do, I stumbled upon numerous mothering or parenting articles that had to do with breast-feeding — the benefits, how it has become almost taboo, indecency and even how Facebook itself has lifted the ban on breast-feeding photographs.

Can comedy be an act of war?

Apparently North Korea’s Leader Kim Jong Un doesn’t have much of a sense of humor.
Funnyman Seth Rogen’s “The Interview,” is set for release in October and according to North Korea, this will be an “Act of War.”
The movie, which features Rogen alongside James Franco, pits the two actors as celebrity journalists who land an interview with the North Korean President Kim Jong Un.
This prompts the Central Intelligence Agency to recruit the wannabe journalists to assassinate North Korea’s leader.

Clifford Lee Jones

Funeral Services for Clifford Lee Jones will be held Saturday, June 28, 2014 at New Living Word Ministries at 1:00pm. Mr. Jones was born on April 10, 1950 and passed away on June 19, 2014.

Clifford was a loving husband to Jeanette Jones for 42 years. He was a wonderful father to 3 daughters, Teresa, LaJeana, and Jenequa Jones He was a grandfather of 3 and great-grandfather of 1. He worked for the City of Ruston Water and Sewer for 25 years at the time of his death.
