Grambling acts to improve infrastructure

Ordinance passed in plan to add hotel/retail outlet to city

GRAMBLING — Grambling’s City Council paved the way to try to help secure a hotel/retail outlet and to create a recreation trail through town as it held its regular monthly meeting Thursday night at City Hall.
Also passed was a motion authorizing the Ruston Daily Leader as official journal for the city for the upcoming year.

LPPJ tweaks solid waste policy

Due to some contractors taking advantage of the free services the Lincoln Parish Solid Waste Department offers, the Lincoln Parish Police Jury created an addendum to the current landfill policy statement.
“We’ve had some contractors pull up on scales and present themselves as hauling residential material and so there was no charge,” Parish Administrator Courtney Hall said.
Hall said one company in particular was bringing up to 20 tons a month and passing the material off as residential rather than commercial.

Scouts prepare for flag retirement ceremony

Cub and Boys Scouts from Pack 45 and Troop 45 in Ruston were hard at work Saturday morning cutting up American flags for proper disposal during a Flag Retirement Ceremony to be conducted as part of Flag Day festivities by the scouts and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3615 at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, next to Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Area residents are encouraged to join the scouts and VFW for the ceremony. Pictured are Pack 45 Cub Scouts Matthew Dalton, Luke Wages and Hunter Ellenberger cutting up the flags.

Cramped courthouse

Registrar of Voters Dianna Stone is one person with one employee. The two ladies share three small rooms in the first floor of the Lincoln Parish Courthouse and during early voting, have overseen some 2,000 people voting on three machines with no security and no room for error.
But having no room for error is difficult when there is no room for records, technology and office materials that could make keeping up with the thousands of voters in Lincoln Parish a little easier.

Golfers hit links to show support for area MDA

Local agencies competed in the Ruston Local 4019 10th annual Golf Classic benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Friday morning at Trails End Golf Course in Arcadia.
The four-man scramble, which was open to the public, featured EMS, firefighters and police from Lincoln and surrounding parishes.
Katie Davidson, president of Ruston Professional Firefighters Union, said all proceeds go to benefit the MDA.
“This goes along with our ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign and at the end of the year we tally the total amount and give it all to (the MDA),” Davidson said.

Tech needs to retire Dean’s jersey

Our two cents worth on various topics in the sports world (or maybe a quarter’s worth):
LET’S HONOR DEAN: He is a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame and Louisiana Tech University Hall of Fame.
Now, it is time to honor Fred Dean again.
How about having a jersey retiring ceremony for the best pass rusher in Tech history?
Dean’s No. 70 Bulldogs’ jersey became a familiar obstacle to ball carriers during a highly decorated college career that included Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Southland Conference and All-American recognition.
