Convocation brought excitement to students

Louisiana Tech's newest Bulldogs ended Wednesday night's Freshman Convocation by tossing the Tech Medallions they received into the Lady of the Mist fountain. Students will get the medallions back upon completing their degrees with their year of graduation stamped on it.
Alumni, faculty and staff greeted the new students as they emerged from Howard Auditorium after hearing welcoming remarks from President Les Guice, various university administrators, the Student Government Association president and notable alumni.

Local police arrests three

Culbertson, Garner, Albritton arrest.jpg

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office made three arrests at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday at 1312 Fairfield Street. LPNET, along with LPSO, served a search warrant of the residence 2001 W. Alabama Ave. Lot 11A for the suspect, Melvin Garner. The suspect was not present, but knowing that Garner was with Matthew Culbertson at 1312 Fairfield St., police were able to make the arrest.

Temporary burn ban in effect

The Lincoln Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 has issued an emergency order banning all open-air outdoor burning effective immediately. This burn ban coincides with Lincoln Parish Police Jury Ordinance No. 276-06-(1) which authorizes Commissioners of Fire Protection District No. 1 of Lincoln Parish to impose a temporary ban on open-air outdoor burning within said district.

Parish prepared for next hurricane

Emergency preparedness officials say they’re ready to handle evacuees that the next hurricane to hit Louisiana may send northward.
Representatives of local and state agencies, law enforcement, volunteer groups and the American Red Cross, gathered in Ruston last week to review disaster shelter plans, should a storm drive evacuees to Lincoln Parish.
“We just wanted to get ready for any event that might come our way associated with hurricane season,” Kip Franklin, Lincoln Parish director of homeland security and emergency preparedness, said.

Dove season begins Saturday

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) would like to remind hunters that the 2013-14 dove hunting season starts on Saturday in both the north and south zones.
The LDWF is issuing this reminder because the 2013-14 Louisiana dove season falls at a later date than past seasons. Furthermore, the LDWF smart phone app may not be updated with the current hunting regulations in time for the start of the dove hunting season.

Quilt raffle begins

The Dubach Chicken Festival Raffle quilt is ready. Tickets will be available at any business in Dubach or at the Dubach Restoration and Beautification Organiation office. Tickets are $1 for one and $5 for six. All proceeds will go to Dubach Restoration and Beautification Organization. For more information call Jean Lowrey at 777-0960.

Local event promotes healthy habits

Each year Ruston residents band together to show their support for the local farmers market.
With plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables available, this year has been no different, with the exception of the new Farm and Art Market.
Tom and Lorrie Faber decided to host the event at Brairhill Farms located off of U.S. Highway 80. Featuring homemade arts and crafts, the event also had freshly canned produce available for customers.

Reading an important pastime

I was not your average child. Even before I was old enough to read, I would crawl into my mother’s lap and ask her to read aloud ­— not from Dr. Seuss or Goldenbooks ­­— but from the murder mystery novels of Agatha Christie. The stories would captivate me and I would be in the early 20th century solving the crimes along with the characters. We were among the few with no television when I was younger, so the only means of entertainment was to either go outside or read a book. I chose to read a book.

Ruston native, Tom Hagan, Ruston High School 1986, and Louisiana Tech 1990, and wife Shannon opened up the first Louisiana Orange Leaf in December 2010 in Monroe with Shannon’s family, including her brother Shane Poole, Tech 1991, hiring Tom’s sister, Amy Hagan Lawrence, Ruston High School 1989 and Tech 1992, as its full-time manager.
