New mosquito concerns arise

Sitting outside enjoying cool summer breezes is a favorite pastime of many North Louisiana residents. Swatting mosquitoes, however, is a constant battle when enjoying the great outdoors during summer months.
While West Nile Virus has long pushed many individuals to spritz on bug spray, Kellie Lowery, director of the local Vector Disease Control International office, said there’s a new concern this year.
“This is a disease that the (Centers for Disease Control) and World Health Organization are watching,” Lowery said.

Succulents require special attention to thrive

Succulent (Latin: succos = juice, sap) plants from more than 60 families and 300 genera have evolved special thickened water-storage tissues. By making the most of scarce available moisture, succulents can survive in habitats that are far too dry for most other plants.

Watch party set for TAC

A watch parties for today’s World Cup match pitting Team USA against Belgium will be held at the Thomas Assembly Center on the Louisiana Tech University campus.
The match is set to start at 3 p.m.
People wanting to attend will need to provide their own food and drink.
Ruston High School soccer coach Joe Aulds and his players have been participating in indoor summer workouts with other area high schools in the Lambright Center and has incorporated game-watch parties as part of those sessions but today that group will join the festivities at the TAC.

Diamond ’Dogs add Wells

Louisiana Tech head baseball coach Greg Goff announced Tuesday the addition of former Mississippi State assistant, Jake Wells, as an assistant coach to the Bulldog coaching staff.
Wells, a former player under Goff at the University of Montevallo in 2004-05, comes to Tech after serving two seasons as the coordinator of camps and volunteer assistant coach at Mississippi State.

Tech Track and Field nets 11 All-La. honors

Louisiana Tech received 11 accolades this week as the All-Louisiana track and field marks were announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA).
The team is made up of the best times in the various outdoor track and field events as provided by the national best times list and information supplied by the school sports information directors. Special awards were nominated by and voted on by SIDs, but they may not vote for someone from their own school.

World Cup fever spreads

Maybe it’s because the Fourth of July — America’s Independence Day — is fast approaching.
Or maybe it’s the fact that when it comes down to it, America loves celebrating its patriotism.
Whatever the reason, after years of building, World Cup fever has exploded across the country with Team USA dominating conversations and news coverage.
And the outbreak has spread to Ruston.
On Thursday, match-watching parties were not only held in local homes, but also at both the Thomas Assembly Center on the Louisiana Tech University campus.
