Emergency medical technicians and paramedics are 14 times more likely to be violently injured on the job than the firefighters they work beside, according to research conducted by Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health.

Ruston utility bills get new look

in
100917 newutilitybill.jpg

Ruston residents will see a new look to their utility bills beginning this week.
The reformatted statements are single-sided and feature the city’s new “Excellence Made Here” logo.
“All of the information is the same, it’s just on one page,” Kourtney Keim, Ruston’s communications director, said.
Keim said the change from the previous double-sided statement came in part because the city wanted to have the bills printed in the area, rather than out of state. The statements will now be printed in Monroe, allowing for a more expedient mail drop, Keim said.

“It will help the west side of the city grow, easy on, easy off,” Mayor Ronny Walker said.

Build your portfolio on a solid foundation

in
Conville, Bobby 2014.jpg

Asset allocation is to investment planning what the foundation is to a house or the chassis is to a car. It’s what everything else is built upon. And just as important as constructing a house on a firm foundation, having the right asset allocation can be vital to helping you work toward your financial goals.

Global investing: Still a journey to consider

in
Halbrook, Andy 2016.jpg

Columbus Day is observed on Monday.
And while it may be true that Leif Erikson and the Vikings beat Columbus to the New World, Columbus Day nonetheless remains important in the public eye, signifying themes such as exploration and discovery.
As an investor, you don’t have to “cross the ocean blue” to find opportunities — but it may be a good idea to put some of your money to work outside the United States.

Looking for answers after the Las Vegas tragedy

in
Bleich, Joe C.jpg

Why did this happen? How could this be?
As we were all, at least indirectly, victimized due to the recent murderous tragedy in Las Vegas, I share with you that this nearly struck home with me. Here’s how.
My court secretary, Teresa, has a daughter who, along with her husband, had planned to attend the country music festival in Las Vegas. At the last moment, she and her husband decided to go elsewhere. Here is part of her description.

New 'storm' brewing on 'Hot War' horizon?

in
Boatright, T. Scott 14.jpg

As Hurricane Nate churns its way inland after a dead-on strike on the Louisiana/Mississippi Gulf Coast, there’s another potential storm that should be monitored early next week.
President Donald Trump on Friday kept the public wondering about his cryptic warning regarding a “calm before the storm.”
“You’ll find out,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked what he meant by his comment.
I’m too young to remember the Cuban Missile Crisis. But I definitely remember the Cold War and the tensions it brought worldwide at times.
