‘Paint the Tunnel’ project begins

Area residents have the opportunity on Sept. 23 to help paint the next Ruston mural.
The mural will be on the east inside wall of the I-20 service road Rock Island tunnel connecting Monroe Street to the service road.
Above, Louisiana Tech University art students began priming the wall on Wednesday.
From left are Shawna Igou, a senior studio art major from Ruston; Allyson Coleman, a junior studio art and graphic design major from Napoleonville; Ashley Williams, a junior graphic design major from Lake Charles; and Sarah Smith, a studio art graduate, from Longview.

Jury has no attorney for Malone trial

FARMERVILLE — A trial is scheduled for Sept. 28-29 in connection with a suit filed by the Union Parish Police Jury against Karl Malone in connection with a fence Malone had installed across what the Police Jury maintains is a public road.
A perhaps more pressing question in connection with the case now is who will represent the Police Jury during the trial.

Aid to flood victims

“Humbling” and “encouraging” were the two words used most when discussing why Daniel Barnes and Olivia Bergeron decided to make their way to Beaumont, Texas, as part of a feeding group from Rolling Hills Ministry.
Barnes said he was thankful for the opportunity to see what it was like on the other side of the disaster relief service. Currently, he works at Rolling Hills and helps victims of disaster through his different duties at the thrift store.

Herndon, Simmons to wed

Nina Courtenay Simmons, of Baton Rouge, and Matthew Glover Herndon, of Baton Rouge, proudly announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Dr. Rick and Sue Simmons, of Ruston. She is the granddaughter of Jim Simmons, of Pawleys Island, South Carolina; the late JoAnne Simmons; and the late Bill and Nina Scaife.

She is a 2008 graduate of Cedar Creek High School, a 2012 graduate of Louisiana Tech University and a 2015 graduate of Louisiana State University Law School. She is a member of Sigma Kappa sorority and the Baton Rouge Bar Association.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jay Haddox, of Ruston, proudly announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Chandler Grace to David Michael Burkhalter, of Monroe.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Haddox, of Ruston; and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Barnes, of Ruston; and the late Mr. and Mrs. W.S. “Billy” Chandler, of the Douglas community.

She is a 2014 graduate of Ruston High School, and will be graduating from Louisiana Tech University in November.
