Dunkin’ Dogs cook up win over Rice

In a battle between two of the top teams in Conference USA’s West Division, Louisiana Tech dominated from start to finish, defeating Rice 74-64, Thursday night in the Thomas Assembly Center.
Rice (12-7, 2-4 C-USA), opened the scoring with an early free throw, but an immediate response on a 3-point shot from Derric Jean gave Louisiana Tech (13-6, 5-1 C-USA) its first lead of the night at 3-1 and the Bulldogs wouldn’t trail again, leading the 40-minute contest for 39 minutes and 10 seconds.

Hunt, Martin accept awards

Ruston businessman Trott Hunt and Sue Martin, co-founder of a local animal rescue agency, were recognized as the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Robert E. Russ Award recipient and Ruston Rotary Club Bill Best Humanitarian Award winners, respectively.
The award winners accepted their recognition at the 97th annual Chamber of Commerce banquet Thursday at the Ruston Civic Center.
Other awards given during the banquet included:
• Business of Year – Frosty Factory of America
• Origin Bank & HGA Young Business Leader of the Year — Kourtney Keim
• Ambassador of the Year — Sonja Burns

Court rules against former fire chief

A district judge has denied former parish fire Chief Dennis Ford’s claims that he’s owed comp time and post-retirement health insurance coverage stemming from his 10 years as head of the Lincoln Parish Fire Protection District No. 1.
In a ruling filed Jan. 13, 3rd Judicial District Judge Cynthia Woodard said Ford failed to meet his burden of proof.
“Therefore, the court denies all claims asserted by (Ford) against the (fire district) for the aforesaid reasons,” Woodward wrote.

Bond commission OK’s Ruston request

Louisiana’s Bond Commission has unanimously approved Ruston’s request to issue up to $34 million in sales tax incremental revenue bonds for transportation projects in the tax incremental district.
The vote came Thursday during the commission’s monthly meeting in Baton Rouge.
“This was just another piece of the puzzle of infrastructure work we need to get done,” Mayor Ronny Walker said.
The first bonds are expected to be sold in about 90 days with the first project on the list being extending the Interstate 20 service road from Highway 33 to Rough Edge Road.
