Summer fun about to heat up

For those of you brave enough to venture out into the blistering summer heat that has already been blasting North Louisiana for weeks now, there’s plenty of fun to be had in upcoming weeks.
It all begins tomorrow as we head into Lincoln Parish’s festival season with the start of the Juneteenth Celebration in Grambling with the Miss Juneteenth Pageant.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

Williams: More than MVP

In terms of Super Bowl history, Doug Williams will be invariably included on a list of trivia questions regarding the NFL’s premier game.
And on Saturday, when the Ruston chapter of the Grambling State University National Alumni Association honors one of its most famous grads, much of the focus will be on the former Tiger star’s history-making performance in Super Bowl XXV.
But there’s some other need-to-know information about Williams.
Here’s 10 little known facts about the head football coach for the G-Men:
1-His full name: Douglas Lee Williams.

Hadnot, Bulldogs close out season

Louisiana Tech University’s 1,600-meter relay team for men and hurdler Yusuf Muhammad concluded their 2013 season on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships at historic Heyward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Tech’s relay team ran 39.71, matching the time the team ran at the recent NCAA East Preliminary Championships that also ranks No. 10 on the all-time list in school history.

Festival tennis entries being accepted

in

Entries are being taken for the 2013 Louisiana Peach Festival tennis tournament.
Registration for the tournament that will be held June 21-13 and will be sponsored by Brennan Dodge is $35 per player for one event and $45 per player for two events.
Entry deadline is June 18. To be guaranteed a T-shirt, individuals are urged to enter by June 14.
Divisions are men’s, women’s and mixed doubles.
The tournament will be played on the Louisiana Tech University courts, home base for this year’s highly successful Lady Techsters’ squad.

Todd Davison has hole-in-one at Pebble Beach

Ruston’s Todd Davison can scratch off one item on his “bucket list.”
He’s made a hole-in-one on one of the most famous and beautiful golf courses in the world.
Davison recently made an “ace” on the par-3 No. 7 hole at the Pebble Beach Golf Links located in Pebble Beach, Calif., where the scenery and landscape is as contagious as the challenges on the course.
He used a 54-degree wedge for his once-in-a-lifetime shot. The ball flew 15 feet over the flag and spun back to drop into the cup.
Witnessing the feat were Kerry Banks and Peter Richardson.

Water contract draws ire of DNR

Southwestern Energy’s decision to enter a contract with the Town of Farmerville to pump 17 million gallons from the Sparta Aquifer rather than using surface water for their rigs, such as the water from Lake D’Arbonne, has drawn the ire of the Department of Natural Resources.
“When word came out that the ground water supply was being drawn it raised some questions in (Commissioner of Conservation) Jim Welsh’s mind because he had been assured multiple times by Southwestern agents they would make every effort to use surface water,” said DNR Communications Director Patrick Courreges.

Rolling across town: Participants lining up to join in Peachy keen fun

Residents might just think they’ve wandered back through time when the annual Louisiana Peach Festival Parade rolls through downtown Ruston on June 22.
This year’s theme is “Feeling Peachy Keen in the ’50s,” so bobby socks, poodle skirts and rolled up jeans will likely fill the floats of those hoping to take the top prize.

A leave of absence

LPFD Chief temporarily out for medical reasons

Three new members found themselves facing early challenges Tuesday as the Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1 Board of Commissioners met for the first time this year.
Richard Aillet, who was voted in as Chairman at the start of the meeting, Bart Dugdale and Ricky Durrett all attended as new commissioners and learned LPFD Chief Dennis Ford has requested a temporary leave for an indeterminate amount of time due to medical reasons.

Remember to stay hydrated during summer activities

School is out and summer is here, which means that kids will be spending a big chunk of their day outside.
Additionally, more individuals will be outside watching or playing softball, playing 18 holes of golf, playing a few sets of tennis, wandering around local festivals, shooting hoops at one of our local outdoor basketball courts or even fishing the lake at Woodland Park — just to name a few summer activities. Although it is good to be outside and be active, it is also a time that presents some concerns. One of which is dehydration.
