Ruston OKs controversial ordinance

Alderman, residents: Board moved too fast

Ruston’s Board of Aldermen has approved an amended ordinance that restricts the authority of the city building official, but some residents and one alderman say the board moved too fast.
“They’ve let the citizens down,” Ruston resident Bob Flournoy said, following Monday night’s 4-1 vote adopting the updates to the ordinance that’s been on the books for more than 50 years. “The citizens are the ones who get shafted on this thing, and the businesspeople.”
“It was moving too fast,” Alderman Elmore Mayfield said. “This thing has been pretty well rammed down their throat.”

Aldermen approve $55.1M budget

in

The city of Ruston has a new $55.1 million budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Aldermen approved the spending plan Monday night on a 4-1 vote, with only Alderman Elmore Mayfield objecting.
Mayfield wants an additional $10,000 added to the budget for the Lincoln Total Community Action Head Start program. Mayfield sits on the program’s board of directors. Head Start is a preschool program for children ages 3-5 years old. It serves 324 local youngsters.
The city’s new budget already includes $10,000 for Head Start.

Spearsville chief held on rape

FARMERVILLE (AP) — Spearsville Police Chief Steve E. Bodine, accused of aggravated rape of a child under the age of 13, has been indicted by a Union Parish grand jury.
The 64-year-old Bodine was booked late Monday afternoon into the Union Parish Detention Center. State District Court Judge Cynthia Woodard set bond at $500,000.
Union Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Dusty Gates said the indictment and arrest of Bodine came after a yearlong investigation by sheriff’s investigators, state police detectives and the district attorney’s office.

Sometimes small city living is all one needs.
Four years ago, Britt Choate brought Counter Culture back to Ruston. Knowing that, in 1977, the original Counter Culture first opened on Arizona Avenue, Choate took the opportunity to buy the current Counter Culture building and open one in Ruston again.
Last year, Choate also opened another location on the Louisiana Tech University campus at the Maxie Lambright Intramural Center. Counter Culture is not his only business; he owns a granite countertop business in Bossier City as well as another restaurant in Waco, Texas.

The time for fall soil testing is here

Hotard, Steven.jpg

The end to another warm growing season is fast approaching. The 2013 September equinox comes at 3:44 p.m. Sept. 22.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun is rising later now, and nightfall comes sooner. This is our autumn equinox, when the days are getting shorter in the Northern Hemisphere.
At this equinox, day and night are approximately equal in length. It is a time with later dawns and earlier sunsets as the sun’s path across the sky shifts toward the south. The shorter days will be bringing cooler weather.
