RFD responds to calls

Ruston Fire Department received calls to 18 different emergencies over the weekend.
Included were six false alarms, seven medical emergencies, four car crashes, one car fire and one mutual aid to the Lincoln Parish Fire Department for a chimney fire on Highway 146 (pictured above).
A total of 13 people were transported to Northern Louisiana Medical Center over the weekend.

Community Garage Sale set for Saturday morning

Residents looking for a great deal or a chance to clean out the clutter in their homes will have an opportunity to do both this weekend.
On Saturday, the Lincoln Parish Library will host their second Community Garage Sale from 9 a.m. until noon in the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center.
There is no deadline for sellers, but booth spaces are given on a first come, first-served basis.
Emily Arnold, programming coordinator for LPL, said this event was very popular the first time around.

Don Shows dies at the age of 75

Longtime West Monroe High School football coach Don Shows, a Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech University graduate, died this morning at the age of 75.
Shows, a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, took over the West Monroe football program in 1989 and guided eight teams to state titles in his tenure with the last coming in 2011.
He gained much of that football at Ruston High, where he played tailback in the Notre Dame box formation under legendary coach L.J. “Hoss” Garrett. He also played baseball for the Bearcats and was a four-time state track champion for RHS.

’Dogs top Blazers for 67-58 road win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Louisiana Tech was able to keep pace in the race for a Conference USA regular season championship on Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs held off a late push by UAB to win 67-58 inside Bartow Arena.
All four teams atop the standings won along with Tech (24-6, 12-3 C-USA) which sets up an entertaining final regular season game day this Thursday.

Tech hosts Argent Financial Classic

Louisiana Tech begins play in the annual Argent Financial Classic beginning Monday at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, hosting 13 teams including in-state foes UL-Monroe and UL-Lafayette.
Originally scheduled for a 54-hole, three-round tournament weather forecasts calling for below freezing temperatures have forced officials to cut the tournament down to a 36-hole, two-round tournament that began with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. today. Admission is free to all spectators at Squire Creek Country Club.

Bearcats back in action tonight

Golden Gophers defeat Diamond ’Dogs, 6-1

Louisiana Tech batters managed just four base hits and only five baserunners in the game as Minnesota won the third game of the weekend and the series with a 6-1 victory Sunday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Minnesota (6-3) scored two runs in the second and added more later as the Golden Gophers’ starter Ben Meyer shut down Tech (3-7) at the plate, while not allowing a Bulldog player to reach base in six of the seven innings he pitched.
Meyer (1-1) earned the win for Minnesota after allowing just one run off two hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Become educated on Common Core

State Rep. Rob Shadoin has submitted a bill to the House to slow down the implementation of Common Core standards in Louisiana’s public education system. There is little doubt that Common Core is a controversial subject. To quote Bob Dylan, “The times they are a-changing.”

Hunker down until spring

Is this the start of March or April? Because I definitely feel like I’m being fooled.
I realize that in these parts we often get one last cold spell in March, but considering we first got our taste of this winter’s frozen precipitation in November, I have to admit I was a little tired, and maybe even disappointed, to see a few snowflakes floating through the air this morning.
Mother Nature and Jack Frost, I’ve had enough of your winter’s dance. I know hunting season has ended, but I’m about ready to go looking for groundhog with a double-barreled shotgun.
