Pay raises get go ahead

Sales and Use Tax Commission bumps up employee salaries

After a short discussion, it was agreed that the employees working for the Lincoln Parish Sales and Use Tax Commission will be given a 3 percent raise this year.
During their regular meeting earlier this month, commissioners approved a 2013-14 budget that included the raise for employees. The original budget, which had been introduced at the commissions previous meeting, had included a 2.5 percent budget.

Three presidents honored at Tech’s Spirit Park

Three new “residents” were welcomed into Louisiana Tech University’s Spirit Park recently, as bronze busts of Louisiana Tech Presidents Ralph L. Ropp (1949 – 1962), F. Jay Taylor (1962 – 1987) and Daniel D. Reneau (1987 – 2013) were unveiled during an afternoon ceremony attended by family, friends and administrators.
The three new busts join those of Albert Einstein, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Anne Frank and Voltaire in Spirit Park, which is located between Davison Hall and the Biomedical Engineering Building on the Louisiana Tech campus.

Pepper is a little girl about 5 months old and only about 20 pounds. Spotted tan and white color with blue eyes, she is a sweetheart wanting to give a good home some love. NAMI Ruston to celebrate 27 years of support

The Ruston Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will celebrate its 27th Anniversary and National Mental Health Month. A program and dinner will be held, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center, located at 910 North Trenton St.
This event is free, and all interested people are invited. For more information and to RSVP for the anniversary and National Mental Health Month event, please contact me.

Tech tennis duo honored

Starkova, Nalborska named to All-Louisiana team

Joanna Nalborska and Alexandra Starkova have applied an exclamation mark to their outstanding spring for the Louisiana Tech University tennis program.
The dynamic tandem have been announced as second unit members of the 2013 All-Louisiana collegiate squad selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Nalborska and Starkova were instrumental in guiding the Lady Techsters of first-year Head Coach Freddy Gomez to an overall record of 15-5 and Western Athletic Conference mark of 7-1.

Tech tracksters earn Eugene trip

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Louisiana Tech University added another hurdler and the men’s 400-meter relay team to its list of athletes that have punched their tickets to Eugene, Ore., and the annual NCAA outdoor championships next month.
Advancing to the national meet following last weekend’s NCAA East preliminary meet at the Irwin Belk Track Complex were women’s hurdler Kim Francis and the men’s quarter-mile relay squad.

Time to prepare for storm season

Up here in Northern Louisiana, it’s easy to forget that hurricane season is right around the corner.
Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30, which is why this week is set aside as National Hurricane Preparedness Week by the National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane experts have predicted the 2013 hurricane season will be more active than usual, so the time to prepare is now.

Rememer their sacrifices

Last year, I had only been employed at the Ruston Daily Leader only a few months when assigned to the Cook Baptist annual fish fry for service members, retired and active, and their spouses. While there, I took the time to visit with veterans and gain some insight into their experiences and left the event with a renewed sense of patriotism and gratitude.
However, it was later that summer that I really understood sacrifice those in the military and their families endure. From a tragic event, I was able to visit with family members that had lost a loved one during war.

Mrs. Norma Jean Thompson Thornton

Funeral services for Mrs. Norma Jean Thompson Thornton, age 87 of Ruston, will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Ruston. The Reverend Bill Easterling will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Thornton was born January 27, 1926 in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Manford James Thompson and Julia Bottoms Thompson. She died May 25, 2013 in Ruston.  She was a beautician by trade. Mrs. Thompson had many talents.
