Parish plagued with grass fires

Sunday’s slow, steady rain had to look pretty good to area firefighters who spent much of January fighting grass fires that plagued a very dry Lincoln Parish in recent weeks.

Guice to chair Innovation Council

Gov. Bobby Jindal has appointed Louisiana Tech University President Les Guice to chair the Louisiana Innovation Council (LIC). Guice will lead the LIC as it continues to develop policies designed to advance the state’s innovation agenda in an effort to help grow Louisiana’s economy.

Tips for spotting signs that someone is suicidal

There have been numerous suicides reported in the national news. These two articles provide suggestions for recognizing and helping a suicidal person. The major source of this information was helpguide.org.
The following are suggestions for spotting signs and helping a suicidal person:
A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that does not mean that help is not wanted. Most people who commit suicide do not want to die — they just want to stop hurting. Suicide prevention starts with recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously.

Orange is the color of respect: Dating Violence Awareness Events

As National Dating Violence Awareness Month arrives, DART is proud to be partnering with student groups on the campuses of Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State University. Alpha Chi Omega will partner with us at Louisiana Tech and the BSW Club will be joining forces with us at Grambling.
Students at both campuses will be able to participate in Dating Violence Awareness Events during Valentine’s Day week.

‘All Because of Agatha’ auditions this week

The Ruston Community Theatre announces auditions for the production of "All Because of Agatha" by Jonathan Troy. Written in 1964 the play is a comedy/farce.
Duff O'Hara is a cartoonist and can live where he wants. At the urging of his wife, Joan, the couple decides to move to historic Salem, Mass.
There they fall in love with a charming rustic old house a realtor is showing them; but Duff has misgivings when the realtor accidentally admits that the house has one rather bizarre feature, which has prevented other tenants from staying very long.

Funeral services for Jane Gunn Corley, age 70, of Ruston, LA will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 3, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Dr. Chris Craig, Rev. Andy Johnson, and Rev. Dudley Poda. Visitation will begin at 12:30 P.M. until service time at the church. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ringgold, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.

Choudrant fire burns five acres

A grass fire off of La. Highway 145 and Emory Road in Choudrant Saturday afternoon burned five acres of grass and scrub before being contained by firefighters from the Choudrant and Lincoln Parish Fire Departments. Choudrant fire chief Bill Sanderson said he watched the fire quickly spread from one to five acres as fire personnel were hooking up hoses to battle the blaze. He said quick reaction from fire personnel prevented the fire from reaching nearby structures.

City pondering bid on UP land on land?

Aldermen to discuss spending $15k for water initiative site

Ruston’s Board of Aldermen will be asked Monday to agree to spend up to $15,000 as the city’s share of the possible purchase of state-owned property on Lake D’Arbonne that could become the site of a water treatment plant for Lincoln and Union parishes.
Aldermen convene at 5:30 p.m. in the courtroom at Ruston’s City Hall.
But whether the state will eventually offer for sale the approximately 21.5 acres being sought by the Union-Lincoln Regional Water Supply Initiative is baffling, Mayor Dan Hollingsworth said Friday.
