Three Louisiana Tech University professors from the College of Engineering and Science joined dignitaries representing 157 universities from around the world last week, in Córdoba, Argentina to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC.)

Mobile vet rolls into Lincoln Parish

Animal lovers who don’t have time to visit the vet are now in luck as Thomas Mobile Veterinary Clinic is in the business of making house calls.
After selling his nine-year-old veterinary practice in 2008, Tyler Thomas was visiting a veterinary conference in Las Vegas, Nev., when he saw a mobile vet unit.
“I thought about it for a year, and then purchased a mobile vet unit in January 2012.” Thomas said. “It arrived at the end of March (2012), and started in April (2012).”

Leach to compete in Miss America in September

The Miss Louisiana Organization is excited to announce that Miss Spirit of the Ouachita and West Monroe native Jaden Leach was crowned Miss Louisiana 2013.
The Miss Louisiana Pageant was held at the Monroe Civic Center’s W.L. “Jack” Howard Theater in Monroe with a record crowd witnessing the live show unfold as the rest of the state watched on television.
This year’s pageant marked the 50th Anniversary of the Miss Louisiana Pageant in Monroe.

Scouts assist in flag ceremony

Cub Scouts from Pack 59 (pictured in front) and Boy Scouts from Troop 45 (back), both based in Ruston, recently assisted VFW Post 3615 in a ceremony to retire more than 75 flags. The ceremony was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Ruston on Flag Day.

There’s no place like home

Holtz prepared for long stay with Bulldogs

Head football coach Skip Holtz has been on the job at Louisiana Tech University for six months and has been well received by Ruston and the entire community.
Holtz was announced as the new head coach in December 2012 and has worked nonstop ever since in preparations for the upcoming football season.
“There’s an unbelievable amount of positives about Louisiana Tech,” Holtz said. “The sky is the limit for what we want to accomplish here in Ruston.”

Pieces slowly coming together for Pelicans

First off let me start by saying I loved the New Orleans Pelicans selection of Nerlens Noel as their first pick in this year’s NBA draft.
Yes, I realize that Noel is probably a poor man’s Anthony Davis with added injury issues. And while those two would have made an imposing shot-blocking tandem, I also realize that Noel might have been the best fit for the young Pelicans at this point.

Tech football tickets on special sale

As part of the University’s continued celebration of its official affiliation with Conference USA, Louisiana Tech Athletics is offering a single game ticket special starting July 8 and running through the rest of the month.
Tech football fans can take advantage of the “C-USA SALE-ebration Special” by purchasing one ticket (east side general admission only) and receiving a second one for free to any of the Bulldogs four home league games this year against Tulane (Sept. 12), North Texas (Oct. 19), Southern Miss (Nov. 9) and Tulsa (Nov. 23).

‘Family Day Out’ fun for everyone

There’s nothing like a summer “Family Day Out,” especially when there’s a giant crawfish involved.
Visitors to the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center at 10 a.m. Saturday will be greeted by such an enormous mudbug as part of the first “Family Day Out” event.
During the event, Dee Scallan will be on hand to read from the author’s books from her Crawfish Tales series and will be joined by lead character Moby Pincher.

Barbara Courtney Land

Services for Barbara Courtney Land, age 85 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the Presbyterian Church of Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Edith Hill. Visitation will be t the church from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Mrs. Land was born in Mt. Lebanon, LA on September 29, 1927 and died Friday, July 5, 2013 in Ruston. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Jack McCormick Land, Sr. They were married at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Mt.

Claxton Herbert Wactor

Funeral services for Claxton Herbert Wactor, age 89, of Oak Grove, LA, will be 10:00AM, Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove with Rev. Jimbo Herring officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove City Cemetery. Service are under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00PM - 8:00PM at Cox Funeral Home.
