I didn’t want to go to the conference. I figured I could learn as much from sources right here in Louisiana. But the corporate bosses thought otherwise.
So, being a dutiful reporter, I made my reservations, packed my carry-on bag and called a friend to take me to the airport before dawn. I had convinced myself that the trek to Florida wouldn’t be too bad. After all, I was managing to avoid Atlanta, and would be home in three days, in time for my mother’s birthday.

GRAMBLING — It might be hard to imagine positives coming out of a 48-10 loss, but that’s the way Grambling State University head football coach Doug Williams feels.
And he feels his Tigers could be ready to turn the corner and pick up their first win of the season, finally helping to dissolve the specter of last year’s 1-10 campaign and 0-2 start to this season.

Tech volleyball falls in heartbreaker at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Louisiana Tech fought back from two sets down, but eventually fell to Stephen F. Austin 2-3 (20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 12-15) in a valiant effort put together by the Lady Techsters at Shelton Gym.
Tech (4-4) dropped the opening two sets 25-20 before mounting a comeback to tie the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth set.
Stephen F. Austin (6-2) eventually topped the Lady Techsters by three points in the final set in the Ladyjacks’ 2013 home opener.

Promotions, tailgating set for Bulldogs vs. Tulane football game

When Louisiana Tech hosts Tulane Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium, it will be the University’s inaugural league game as a member of Conference USA.
It will also be the fifth annual Community Trust Bank RED OUT game as well as the annual Bulldogs Tackling Breast Cancer game. In other words, it will be a big night for Skip Holtz and the Bulldog football program as well as all Louisiana Tech faithful attending the nationally televised contest

Mr. John Malon Farrar, Jr

Funeral services for Mr. John Malon Farrar, Jr. will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, September 13, 2013 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach. Officiating the service will be Rev. Connie Smith. Burial will follow in Lisbon Cemetery in Lisbon under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Farrar passed away September 7, 2013 in Longview, TX at the age of 89. Mr. Farrar was born in Lillie on December 1, 1923. He graduated from Bernice High School in 1941 and attended Louisiana Tech majoring in Chemical Engineering.

Visitation for R. W. Gregory, Jr. will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. A family graveside service will be held the next morning at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Tim Neustifter officiating. R. W. was born February 5, 1926 and passed away September 9, 2013. Mr. Gregory was a lifelong resident of Ouachita and Union Parish. He was born in Monroe and spent most of his life in the Monroe area. Mr. Gregory served two and one-half years in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific aboard the U.

Graveside services for Evie Mae Murray, age 92, of Calhoun was held Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM at MT. Zion Cemetery in Calhoun under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Officiating the service was Rev. Mickey Frost Mrs. Murray was born March 23, 1921 and passed away September 9, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Cleo Murray. She is survived by her grandsons: Jamison Murray of Calhoun and Jasen Murray of Panama City Beach, Fl; great grandson: Jess Rich and several nieces and nephews.
