White’s 27-win club posts best-ever APR mark

On the court and off of it, Louisiana Tech University’s basketball Bulldogs did just fine during the 2012-13 school year.
The team that had a 27-7 record, shared a regular season Western Athletic Conference championship and dented the nation’s Top 25 polls left its fans with plenty of fond memories during the year of leadership under Head Coach Michael White.
At the same time, the Bulldogs took care of their business in the classroom.
According to the latest and all-important Academic Progress Rates announced by the NCAA, the team had an all-time single season best mark of 951.

LSU in Omaha, set for UCLA

OMAHA, Neb. — It’s been nearly four years since an LSU baseball team stepped foot in the city of Omaha. Shortly after 11 a.m. local time Thursday, the Tigers’ charter plane landed at Eppley Airfield, beginning a new College World Series chapter and arriving to a throng of fans at the team hotel.
LSU players, coaches, support staff and administrators took the two-hour flight before getting their first glances at TD Ameritrade Park on the drive into downtown Omaha.
It was LSU’s first taste of Omaha as anticipation builds for a matchup with UCLA at 7 p.m. CT Sunday live on ESPN2.

Johnson camp wraps up today

The final day of the free basketball camp being hosted by Theodis Johnson will be held today at East End Park in Ruston beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The clinic, open to boys and girls in grades one-through-12, will stress the basics and fundamentals of the sport.
Each day’s session will start at 5:30 p.m.
Johnson, who guided Dubach High to a girls’ Class C Louisiana High School Athletic Association state title this year, can be contacted at 235-672 for more information.

Marijuana laws changing

In a little over a year I’ve had the chance to watch my family grow and change. Some were unexpected, while others we knew would happen in due time.
That is sort of the approach that has been taken in the offices of lawmakers recently. We may believe that the laws passed by these men and women were unexpected and out of left field, but the truth is if residents were paying attention they would know that some things never change.
For instance, the marijuana laws that have been debated in recent months — some of the outrage may come as a shock, but maybe not.

Funeral services for Mrs. Judy Cooper Martin, age 66 of Ruston, will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Scott Jennings and Rev. Greg Tipton. Burial will follow in Unionville Cemetery in Dubach under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Martin was born November 7, 1946 in Dubach to Elmer Lane Cooper and Nancy Sanders Cooper. She died June 13, 2013 at her home in Ruston after a lengthy illness. She was a cafeteria worker at Hillcrest Elementary for many years. In her spare time, Mrs.
